Patrick Monahan 'Hug Me I Feel Good'
One thing is abundantly clear as this evening progresses; Patrick Monahan does not need material. A microphone and a captive audience will suffice. This instantly likable Irish/Iranian/Geordie comic sets the tone with a rambling offstage introduction for himself that immediately yields some big laughs before he’s even set foot on stage. Once there he sets about getting to know the audience and finds a veritable goldmine in the shape of a family outing and some Dutch tourists to whom he continually returns for more mischievous banter throughout.
What little material Monahan uses is keenly observed and sharply executed as he weaves stories seamlessly into the improvised back and forth with the audience. His energy levels do not let up as he overruns his time without a care in the world.
He fittingly remarks during a spot of technical difficulty involving his radio mic that he wants to “walk around and touch people.” He’s unafraid to venture into the audience, high-fiving and hugging anyone within touching distance. The fact that he performs for over two hours and still takes the time to hug each and every member of the audience as they file out of the venue is very much a measure of the man. He feels good too.
