Boothby Graffoe & NIck Pynn 'Bang! Is This Your Vehicle Sir?'
Musical comedy is a tough old nut to crack at the best of times, but the faithful following of Boothby Graffoe and Nick Pynn suggests they're doing something right. Their crowd bay song requests for the encore, and while the venue isn't swamped with belly laughs, there are certainly a good few chuckles throughout.
They are an amiable two, forming a very comfortable presence on stage, and it's this affability which makes it feel more like we're watching a friend on form than cutting-edge comedy. The dreaded audience participation sections which top and tail the night are handled brilliantly, and an improvised number about a couple in the crowd is well worked.
Anecdotes and ad libs link the songs well, and one astonishing solo by Pynn with looped guitar riffs and resonating wine glasses offers a respite from profound songsmithery, proving a distinct highlight.
Some sections promise caustic political satire but these stop short of the mark, and it feels as though these could be built on to add an extra dimension to the show. Although the set is entertaining and beautifully delivered, we're left wondering whether there is scope for a little more bite to the material.
