Top Ten Events 17-24 Nov: David Shrigley, Butcher Boy + Sparrow and The Workshop

THE WEEK AHEAD...

It's not just any week that holds the joys of cutlery with names, a dung beetle, and vegetable puppets, but there again, David Shrigley's never made a performance piece before either. From June Spoon and Philip Fork, we move by way of a rare chance to see the rather fine Butcher Boy do their live thing, Death Disco's final monthly swansong, an artful meditation on the what beauty is, and Jurassic-bloody-Park on the big screen taking us back to when we were about 10. It's a good week.

PICKS O' THE WEEK

THEATRE
1. Pass The Spoon
Tramway, Glasgow
Thu 17-Sat 19 Nov, 7.30pm, £14 (£10)

We're pretty damn excited about the world premiere of legendary Glasgow artist David Shrigley's new performance piece, Pass The Spoon, which he's worked on with award-winning composer David Fennessy, and acclaimed director Nicholas Bone. They're rather simply calling it "a sort-of opera about cookery". But we reckon that goes nowhere near to describing the magic that lies within, where actors, live music from the Red Note Ensemble, and cute vegetable puppets mingle in a world where the cutlery have names, and there's a cute little dung beetle puppet operated by an evil shit, called, er, The Shit.

MUSIC
2. Butcher Boy
Langside Hall, Glasgow
Sat 19 Nov, 7.30pm, £8

Something of a ghost on the live circuit, Butcher Boy give their third album its first proper airing in the kind of grandiose surrounds it deserves, as they take to a Grade A-listed old bank out in the sticks of Shawlands. Cue a careful layering of strings, guitars, and piano arrangements, resplendent with John Blair Hunt's emotive vocals, and you're hopefully close to imagining how fucking magical this'll be. Stellar support comes from one-time Y'All is Fantasy Islander, Adam Stafford. We're currently playing gem of a song I Am The Butcher to oblivion, our favourite track off the new album. Have a listen: here

CLUBS
3. Mr Scruff
Potterrow, Edinburgh
Thu 17 Nov, 10pm, £15 (£12.50)

Mr Scruff, aka Macclesfield DJ and artist Andy Carthy, is somewhat of a master in his field – known for playing marathon mash-up sets, mixing a junk-shop bag of sounds and bringing his beats to life with his own squiggly, scribbled animations. He's currently on the road touring the hell outta his first major release, Keep It Unreal, playing both Edinburgh and Glasgow before the weekend's even out. We've been getting delight just browsing his rather lovely hand-doodled website.

CLUBS
4. Death Disco's Final Fling
The Arches, Glasgow
Sat 19 Nov, 11pm, £14

It's set to be a bit of a monumental weekend over at The Arches cavernous lair, as after nine glorious years Death Disco call time on their monthly club night (although they do promise to return in the spring with some massive one-off party nights). They'll be going out in suitably glittery style, with Stuart Price's faux-Gallic alter ego (aka Jacques Lu Cont) illuminating the dancefloor with his 80s-inspired electro-synth, plus back-up from The 2 Bears (pictured, in their furry form), the eclectic London duo made up of Joe Goddard (of Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell.

ART
5. Beholder
Talbot Rice, Edinburgh
Sat 19 Nov-Sat 18 Feb, 10am-5pm (Tue-Sat), Free

Putting beauty quite literally in the frame, Talbot Rice have invited a selection of artists, individuals, and art organisations to loan or nominate a single artwork that they consider represents 'beauty' in some form or another. During the course of the exhibition, visitors are invited to vote for their favourite piece (either in the gallery, on online via their Facebook page), whereby creating a silent exchange of views on the much contested theme of what beauty is, and how we perceive it.

MUSIC
6. Vic Galloway Presents...
Electric Circus, Edinburgh
Thu 17 Nov, 7pm, £6

Proving popular with his debut night last month – when his guests included Bwani Junction and Blank Canvas – Vic Galloway returns with his now monthly showcase slot at Electric Circus, where the man himself hand-picks the acts for your aural delectation. This month's line-up features a trio of local talent: Remember Remember (pictured), Jonnie Common, and Adam Stafford (making a second appearance in our week, as he does the rounds this month and next).

MUSIC
7. LAID w/ Bwani Junction
Bloc, Glasgow
Wed 23 Nov, 9pm, Free

Those cheeky chappies over at the LAID camp brighten our week once again with their egg-themed fun night, taken to new highs as they play host to Bwani Junction's launch for their debut LP, Fully Cocked. You can read an interview with the band from our November issue here. They'll be supported by the baroque pop meanderings of The Seventeenth Century, plus live visuals, DJs playing into the bedtime hours, and egg boxes hidden around the place, filled with fortune-telling eggs and mini chocolate eggs. We're hooked.

MUSIC
8. Sparrow and The Workshop
Nice 'n' Sleazy, Glasgow
Wed 23 Nov, 8pm, £6

Sleazy's continue with their monthly reign, welcoming live favourites Sparrow and the Workshop to the stage, who with any luck will be cherry-picking from this year's second album proper, Spitting Daggers, a rollicking beast of a thing fueled on stop-start drums, crackling percussive crescendos, and, o'course, Jill O'Sullivan's yowling battle cries. Support comes from Martin John Henry (aka that guy from De Rosa). And you can stay on for a bit of Durty Booty, with resident DJ Otis Galloway playing his own inimitable brand of hip-hop, breakbeats and funky Chicago house.

MUSIC
9. Homework
Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh
Sat 19 Nov, 7pm, £5

Edinburgh-based quartet Homework (pictured, and chatted with here) finally drop their debut LP, a glorious punch-in-the-gub of jittering ADD art-rock (have a wee listen to some tracks here). As a treat for punters on the night they'll be offering up a limited-run of hand-made physical copies of said LP. It's then album launches a-go-go, as Donna Maciocia (aka the voice of Amplifico) launches her debut release at Sneaky's the following night, supported by Matt Norris and The Moon, and live doodling from the Too Much Fun Club.

FILM
10. Jurassic Park / Labyrinth
Cameo, Edinburgh
Sun 20 Nov, 1.30pm, £7 (£5.50)

Kids of the 80s unite, as the Cameo Cinema pull out a couple of old classics for this Sunday afternoon's rather fine double bill. First up is a bit of prehistoric dinosaur action (you can't beat it) in Steven Spielberg's's take on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name, Jurassic Park, before things turn a bit weird, with freaky red things with detachable limbs, a fox that rides a sheep dog, and, well, David Bowie's barnet (in Labyrinth, what else). We're getting in the mood with a Fireys singalong: here
