Top Ten Events 24 Nov-1 Dec: Withered Hand, Django Django + Vintage Kilo Sale

THE WEEK AHEAD...

Our favourite things to happen this week go a little something like this: tinkering with Jonnie Common's new album in a unique interactive sound installation, buying clothes by the £15 kilo, donning some of those silly glasses to enjoy some 3D fashion graphics, Hudson Mohawke playing a not-sold-out show, The Phantom Band playing a not-so-secret secret show, free cider (at an art fair), and free popcorn (at a DIY film night). And, er, Christmas also rears its jolly head. Apologies for that...

PICKS O' THE WEEK

MUSIC
1. Jonnie Common: Album Launch
Mono, Glasgow
Fri 25-Sun 27 Nov, 7pm, £7

Jonnie Common pretty much takes over our weekend, as he launches his new remix album (of material from his debut LP Master Of None) with all sorts of trimmings – including a mini exhibition from David Galletly (who's designed the very-limited screen print that accompanies the album), and an interactive sound installation which allows punters to mix elements of the album. And, o'course, there will be a full-on live show, where Common and a number of the acts involved will play live, including electro-dance behemoth Ben Butler and Mousepad, GRNR, and DJ sets from FOUND, and The Japanese War Effort.

MUSIC
2. Withered Hand
Henry's Cellar, Edinburgh
Sun 27 Nov, 7pm, £5

Twisted folk fairytales are the order of the day, as Withered Hand takes to Henry's basement for a stripped-back acoustic set, with support from Samantha Crain, and Michael McFarlane. You can also hear him on the Fruit Tree Foundation's EP (downloadable here), where he and fellow mentors Rod Jones and James Yorkston appear with a trio of bright young mentees, with Rod Jones also playing a duo of dates over the week, more's the joy. Now we just have to hope and pray Mr Withered Hand plays the 'wanking on futons' song: Religious Songs.

FASHION
3. The Vintage Kilo Sale
Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Edinburgh
Sat 26 Nov, 11am-4pm, £1

The vintage specialists behind Judy's Affordable Vintage Fair bring their sister project, the mighty Vintage Kilo Sale to Scotland for the first time. The premise is pretty simple; they'll be stuffing Leith's Drill Hall with stacks (2.5 tonnes to be exact) of vintage clothing and accessories for one day only, from which shoppers can choose a pic'n'mix selection and pay just £15 a kilo (which will get you around five items, or so). The rails will be replenished throughout the day, and they promise there'll be plenty of bright winter woollies and leather straight outta this late 70s classic: The Warriors

MUSIC
4. 20 Years Of Sleaze
Nice 'n' Sleazy, Glasgow
Until 30 Nov, See listings

Nice 'n' Sleazy draw their 20 Years Of Sleaze celebrations to a close with a whole host of musical goodness. First up are space-pop experimentalists Django Django, fruitily looping and catchily hooking as they go, with mysterious support from Robert Redford (*cough*, The Phantom Band). Closing festivities are Edinburgh skewed popsters FOUND, headering a rather fine bill alongside Over The Wall, and French Wives, with Digital Winch club playing 'em out (aka The Twilight Sad and Take A Worm For A Walk Week DJs unleashing their usual musical hurricane).

PERFORMANCE
5. Neu! Reekie!: End Of Year Screamer
Scottish Book Trust, Edinburgh
Fri 25 Nov, 7pm, £5 (£4)

Avante garde hellraisers Neu! Reekie! (aka Michael Pedersen and Kevin Williamson) host their finale show of 2011, traversing the line between spoken word, music, and artful animations. On the rather packed bill is a spoken word set from ex-Skids frontman (and director of 16 Years of Alcohol and The Somnambulist) Richard Jobson, poets Miriam Gamble, and Jenny Fagan, live animation from the BAFTA-nominated Iain Gardner, and live music from Davey Henderson's outfit The Sexual Objects, plus N!R!'s first ever pop-up book shop, hosted by Anon Magazine, and the now compulsory Raffle Of The Absurd (win weird stuff!).

FASHION
6. 2colours
Inspace, Edinburgh
Sat 26 & Sun 27 Nov, noon-8pm, Free (but ticketed)

Designer Jacob Birge joins forces with Inspace to host a fashion weekend with a difference, fusing as it does sound design, 3D graphics, and live visual installations. The weekend will be divided into a 'blue' day and a 'red' day, with Saturday kicking off with a new conceptual fashion collection from Birge, including 3D graphics brought to life by anachrome eyeglasses, and a post-show pop-up shop. There will be a second showcase collection on Sunday, followed by an experimental music set and live installations. Read our full preview here.

CLUBS
7. LuckyMe w/ Hudson Mohawke
Sneaky Pete's, Edinburgh
Sat 26 Nov, 11pm, £10

Sneaky Pete's play host to a rather special homegame show for the globetrotting music, art and all-round party crew that is LuckyMe, pretty much brought to you by two exciting little words: Hud Mo. Yup, a certain Mr Hudson Mohawke (pictured) will be taking to the decks, doing his genre-defying, thrill-a-minute underground uber-pop thing, with stellar support from label mates The Blessings, and Eclair Fifi. And we have it on good authority there'll be tickets available on the door, saving the ol' sold-out-in-advance-sad-face scenario.

ART
8. Parade Artists Christmas Sale
WASPS Glasow, Edinburgh
Sat 26 & Sun 27 Nov, 11am-5pm, Free

The creative collective of makers at Parade Artists host their own mini exhibition and Christmas sale over the course of the weekend, with the innovative bunch of artists and designers offering up a selection of paintings, ceramics, glass, textiles, interiors, jewellery, and photography to view and buy. There'll also be a chance to meet and chat with the makers in person, as well as homemade treats from Supper In The Suburbs' on-site pop-up cafe. But the real dealbreaker? Free cider thanks to some rather nifty cider sponsorship. Nice.

COMEDY
9. Rob Deering's Christmas Special
The Stand, Glasgow & The Stand, Edinburgh
Mon 28 & Tue 29 Nov, 8.30pm, £10 (£8)

Yes, 'tis the season already, apparently – well, in Rob Deering's world anyway, as he hosts a double dose of his comedy Christmas Special in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with the man himself musing over all things seasonal in his own inimitable musical comedy way (i.e. there will be dubious rock guitar takes on some festive classics, and perhaps a bit of nudity). It's also his birthday on the same day as he plays his Glasgow date, so a Happy Birthday singalong might be in order.

FILM
10. Low Def
Word Of Mouth, Edinburgh
Thu 24 Nov, 6.30pm, Free

We end with one of our favourite little occasional DIY film nights (i.e. it happens every-now-in-a-not-very-often), Low Def. They return with a new set of one-minute film screenings, where a selection of local amateur filmmakers have risen to the challenge of making a (very) short film in low definition – be that on shitty camcorders, mobile phones, or old Super 8 – on any theme, or in any style, they damn well fancy. The fruits of their labour will then screen in Word Of Mouth cafe, with free popcorn for all. To get artistically involved contact paul@lowdef.co.uk.
