THE WEEK AHEAD...We're in full festive swing over Skinny-way, starting the week with Song, By Toad's annual festive shindig, before we make a path of all things Christmas-y – taking in markets, comedy specials, pop-up shops, and foul-mouthed satirical rants, before ending with a Die Hard movie marathon over at the Grosvenor Cinema. And next week you can look forward to a bumper 20-pick mega newsletter for all your Christmas party and New Year nights-oot planning needs. PICKS O' THE WEEKMUSIC
St Stephen's Centre, Edinburgh
Sat 10 Dec, 2pm, £10
Edinburgh music blogger Song, By Toad (aka Matthew Young) hosts his annual day-long festive knees-up, with a large line-up of local talent (mostly handpicked from Song, By Toad Records, Young's own label) jostling on one rather packed bill. It'll include sets from Meursault, The Japanese War Effort, Rob St John, Jesus H Foxx, Yusuf Azak, and Inspector Tapehead. Musically, the emphasis will be on the fun side of things, so expect a few covers, and a festive singalong or two, with mince pies, an avalanche of tinsel, and a couple of kegs sealing the deal. Tickets available here. FASHION
Summerhall, Edinburgh
Sat 10 Dec, 11am-7pm, £5 (£4)
The Noir! collective return for their tenth outing, a Christmas-themed fair celebrating Scottish creative talent in all its alternative glory (read our preview here). Housed in the suitably unique surrounds of Summerhall (aka the old Dick Vet), the Main Hall will house a boutique-styled fashion market, while the rather ace Dissection Room will become a bar and food court, with avante-garde hellraisers Neu! Reekie! taking over the Anatomy Lecture Room, plus pop-up exhibits, a selection of live performances, and a grand finale fashion show. And we'll be there too. Get your tickets here, it's all for a good cause. MUSIC
Electric Circus, Edinburgh & Oran Mor, Glasgow
Wed 14 Dec & Thu 15 Dec, 7pm, £14.50/£15
Our favourite festive miserablist rounds off his UK winter tour with a duo of Scottish dates, at which he'll be playing some of the new material he's written since he lifted his self-imposed 'song strike', alongside a selection of old faves. He'll be supported, in a fashion, by his semi-instrumental alias Human Don't Be Angry, all sparse, verse-style lyrics set to a bassy, guitar-based backdrop. Get yourself in the mood with a bit of Burst Noel (sample lyric: 'Lights burning from the street in, I know I’ll spend this season greeting'). Ah, Christmas! Listen here: Burst Noel. MUSIC
Heavenly, Glasgow
Fri 9-Sun 11 Dec, All day, £13-£18 (day pass, available here)
The Bubblegum Records-curated Glasgow Popfest returns for its 2011 winter outing, with the mini pop marathon headered this year by the mighty BMX Bandits (pictured), whose documentary Serious Drugs will screen at the GFT the same afternoon. Other festival highlights include sets from Manda Rin, Maple Leaves, Edinburgh School For The Deaf, and The Amphetameanies. And, o'course, the fact that it's all housed in the lovely surrounds of new independent vegan cafe on the block, Heavenly. THEATRE
Citizens Theatre, Glasgow
Wed 14-Sat 17 Dec, 7.30pm, £10.50 (£7.50)
Our pick of the bunch of seasonal theatre offerings (whilst we studiously avoid all things panto) has to be Citizens' Wicked Christmas production, a satirical glance at all the things we love to hate about Christmas. Penned by the Citizens Community Company, it's a sarcastic and gloriously foul-mouthed rant of a thing, this year focusing on a selection of (mostly) true festive tales. They'll also be incorporating a number of punters' stories into the mix, from the embarrassing to the heartfelt. It's no wonder it's always a sell-out (last few tickets available here). EDINBURGH'S ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS MARKET![]() Advertisement Tinderbox Project (Image: Istvan Magyar) Edinburgh's Alternative Christmas Market sets up shop outside St Mary's Cathedral from 8-24 December (open Thur-Sun, 11am-7pm), with the focus on creating a non-exclusive network of Edinburgh-based businesses. They'll be offering up not only myriad stalls selling hand-crafted delights, but also a cabaret-styled circus sideshow in their very own yurt, a selection of bike-powered films programmed by Take One Action and the folks behind Edinburgh's Future Shorts, and live music sets including a flashmob performance from Tinderbox Orchestra, and a Ten Tracks-curated Sunday special on the 18th December (full list of events here). Electric Circus, Edinburgh
Thu 15 Dec, 7pm, £7 advance here
Vic Galloway returns for his monthly showcase slot at Electric Circus, ready to top last month's rather fine trio of acts (Remember Remember, Adam Stafford, and Jonnie Common), with an even heftier bill. The recently-revealed line-up looks like a winner, with Strike The Colours' Jenny Reeve duetting with Sparrow and the Workshop's Jill O'Sullivan, alongside Meursault mainman Neil Pennycook (pictured, accompanied on piano by bandmate Lorcan Doherty), and a certain Mr James Yorkston as a last-minute addition. Oh, and a mysterious guest going by the name of 'Owl John'... CLUBS
7. Night Slugs
La Cheetah, Glasgow
Sat 10 Dec, 11pm, £10 (on the door)
Exciting times this weekend, as La Cheetah play host to the first official Scottish night from one of the hottest underground labels to emerge in London in the last few years, Night Slugs, with label mainmen Bok Bok (pictured) and L-Vis 1990 going head-to-head over a four-hour marathon live set. These lads are charged with having a keen sensibility for what ears want to hear, so it's no wonder then that they pop up East-side the following night for a Sneaky Pete's Coalition club takeover. COMEDY
Mon 12-Sat 17 Dec, 8.30pm, From £10 (£9)
Needing little more than a whiff of encouragement to get full-on into the festive spirit, The Stand kick off their string of Christmas specials this week (running from 12-17 December), with cheeky Perthshire chappie Joe Heenan hosting the fun and games over Edinburgh-way, and firm Stand favourite Susan Calman (pictured) in charge of the Glasgow proceedings. They'll both be aided-and-abetted by a jolly selection of stand-up guests, most likely in Santa hats, and dripping with tinsel. ART
The Art School Union, Glasgow
Sat 10-Thu 15 Dec, 10am-6pm, Free
That creative lot at Glasgow School of Art host their very own pop-up shop-cum-gallery in the Art School Union, at which they'll be showing and selling a selection of work made by GSA students, graduates, and tutors alike – all at affordable prices. There'll be prints, paintings, textiles, gifts, cards, and decorations, all lovingly handmade by the artists. It opens officially on Saturday (10th), with some live acoustic musicians strumming along as you shop, plus the obligatory mulled wine and mince pies. FILM
Grosvenor Cinema, Glasgow
Sat 10 Dec, 6.45pm, £20
We end as all good weeks really should – with a bit of Bruce Willis action. Well, actually, in this case it's a whole lotta Bruce Willis action, as Ashton Lane's Grosvenor Cinema screens all four of the Die Hard movies back-to-back, right through the night, and then serves you up some breakfast post-movie marathon (around the 4am mark). We've been enjoying a gem of a clip to get ourselves in the mood, which is basically a minute-long edited version of Die Hard, entitled The Fucking Short Version. Actual amazing. Watch it: here. |
