| This is the first in a series of fundraising events brought to you by Paul Rina’s Guest House. The idea was borne from a year of travelling, living in backpackers, meeting inspirational characters, seeing crazy stuff and a realisation of just how lucky we are.
We hope to raise money for a different projects we discovered on our travels. They are all small scale projects which receive little or no other funding but are doing great work.
The first one of these is a small community art project being run for school age children in Wilderness, South Africa. Up to 50 young people meet once a week and the session is run by Frida, a fine arts student and a brilliant girl. She uses material she finds on the beach or in rubbish dumps to teach the kids about creativity and expression – for some it is the only real mental stimulation they get. The children live in difficult conditions with a high alcoholism and unemployment rate in the community. Opportunities for fun, freedom and artistic expression are few. They live only a few km from the beach yet some have never even seen the sea.
The young people are really enthusiastic and produce some beautiful work. She does this all off her own back but has big plans to expand the project in to music, drama and other creative arts. She is desperate both for materials and volunteers. We are hoping that whatever we raise can help towards continuing and growing this amazing initiative.
Paul Rina’s Guest House is a concept that we hope all of our community of friends can get on board with – any help towards any of the running and organising of the events will be much appreciated. Let’s try and raise some money for a worthwhile cause doing what we all do so well, having an awesome party!!!
