New in Food: Baba, Lagom, Avo Avo & more

Our guide to some of Edinburgh and Glasgow's best new restaurants, cafes and bars, including an avocado-based restaurant and a new Edinburgh spot from the people behind Ox & Finch

Avo Avo

To misquote Homer Simpson, avocados – is there anything they can't do? Avo Avo, Scotland's first avocado-based eatery, is here to find out. Eggs baked inside an avocado? Yep. Panko-breaded avocado fries? Mmm-hmm. Avocado burger, with an avocado acting as the bun? Incredibly, it's a yes. If nothing else, we're intrigued. 946 Argyle St, Glasgow

BABA

Ox & Finch have become a mainstay of Glasgow's dining scene, and now the team have moved into the capital with BABA. Sharing options abound – there are eight pitta and dip options, all of which have us considering ditching the keyboard and taking an early lunch – plus an exciting selection of grilled meats, fish and veggies to run in tandem. Get your crew together, and prepare to get into a good-natured argument over some muhammara. 130 George St, Edinburgh

BASTA

The rise and rise of artisanal pizza is one of the best trends to hit the Scottish food scene in recent years – everyone likes pizza, it's comparatively cheap to make so it can stay affordable to punters, and it offers us the chance to use words like 'leoparding' a lot. BASTA is the latest find; well-priced, well-made pizza topped with tasty ingredients (backed by a cracker of a soundtrack from the looks of their Spotify account) at their spot in the West End. 561 Dumbarton Rd, Glasgow

Campervan Brewery Taproom

Get your beer straight from the source at Campervan's new taproom in Leith – expect to find four draft options and a host of bottles from the brewery, plus the chance to see just what a VW campervan converted into a microbrewery looks like up close. 112 Jane St, Edinburgh

Considerit

Vegan cakes – they're so hot right now. Evidence of this is Considerit's brick-and-mortar spot across from Summerhall, on the back of regular appearances at markets across the city and beyond. We nipped in on opening day, and Considerit were firing out delicious vegan doughnuts as fast as they could to keep up with demand. Trust us, they're worthy of the hype. 3-5 Sciennes, Edinburgh

Diablo Loco

What was once Clerk's Bar has undergone something of a transformation, morphing into a Mexican-inspired spot in fairly short order. Food-wise you'll find an extensive selection of tacos and Mexico-inspired mains, while the drinks list features an impressive choice of tequilas alongside a solid beer and cocktail selection. 74-78 South Clerk St, Edinburgh

Lagom Kitchen

Bakery47 is no more; that's the bad news. The good news is the former site of the Southside institution is now home to Lagom Kitchen, serving up brunch delights and a comically large selection of cakes, bakes and other treats. 76 Victoria Rd, Glasgow

Lovecrumbs Stockbridge

LC branch out into the leafy, stroll-about world of Stockbridge with a basement spot shared with their good pals from Century General Store. Expect tasty and aesthetically lovely cakes, delicious coffee, and nicely-designed homewares to longingly gaze at/try not to cover in bits of cake. 22 St Stephen's St, Edinburgh

Piece X Piece

Do you like cheese? How do you feel about bread in its various forms? Piece X Piece have got your back, with a comically inventive string of cheesy specials popping up on Instagram since their opening. If for whatever reason you don't fancy a cauliflower cheese stromboli shot through with bacon and onions, you'll also find great bagels, salads and a host of other breakfast and lunch options in the new spot next door to Fieldwork just off Lothian Road. 103 Fountainbridge, Edinburgh
