New cafes and bars in Edinburgh

Thomas J Walls

Taking up residence in (as well as the name of) the former opticians on Forrest Road, Thomas J Walls is a pretty grand place for a coffee. The decor's lovely, with dark wood and tiles everywhere, while the flat whites are pin-sharp. It is also, rather pleasingly, bloody enormous – plenty of room to grab a chair and take a break from the world outside. 35 Forrest Rd.

Foundry 39

An all-day bar and restaurant just off the west end of Princes St, Foundry blends a number of recent common threads together under one roof. Like an artisanally-inclined pizza? Their sourdough offerings will do the trick. Prefer a burger? Foundry have you covered. Throw in an extensive drinks list, and everyone's happy. 39A Queensferry St.

Twelve Triangles Portobello

The second outpost of the top-drawer doughnutters is the latest in a string of great foodie spots to open in Portobello in recent months. Expect great sourdough loaves and croissants alongside the now-legendary doughnuts; the locals have taken to 12T like moths to a flame, so be sure to get down early to beat the rush and/or get your hands on anything. 300 High St, Portobello.

New Food and Drink in Glasgow

Horn Please

Nestled down a flight of stairs in a Berkeley Street basement, Horn Please serves up intriguing contemporary twists on Indian cuisine. Veggies are well-catered for, carnivores can make their way through an ark's worth of exciting meat dishes, and with everything designed for sharing among friends. 91B Berkeley St.

Liberté

A new spot from the people behind YesBar, Liberté is, as the name suggests, a French bar and bistro. You'll find French bistro classics with a few Scottish twists, and a well-formed wine list to get stuck into from the patio seating outside. 241 North St.

Kind Crusts

Vegan grub gets a bad wrap sometimes, but the vegan and gluten-free treats on offer at Kind Crusts show that you don't need huge piles of meat and cheese to have a tasty lunch. Expect exciting and inventive vegan options, from 'beetball' sandwiches (that's beetroot and red lentil balls in a tomato ragu) to the previously-unimagined vegan club sandwich. 160 Garthland Dr.
