GFF 2010: Handsome Harry

What is the measure of a man? Answers to that question can range from the archly philosophical to the outright vulgar; while James Toback, Oliver Stone and Michael Mann have notions best described as absolute, the likes of Scorsese, Almodovar and Ang Lee have dared to expose and critique the darkest and most painful facets of male identity. Cult director Bette Gordon attempts a similar take to the latter three with this deceptively low-key drama. With a plot not dissimilar to Waltz With Bashir, Jamey Sheridan's Harry attempts to uncover the truth of a past transgression, one most of his old navy buddies have chosen to forget, but at least one (Steve Buscemi) knows will damn them. It’s a slow journey, and the narrative lacks drive, while Sheridan has the talent, but not the presence, for the lead. That said, the performances are excellent, which means getting to the shocking and moving conclusion is no chore.
