Last Chance Harvey

3/5 stars

Divorcee Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) is on the verge of losing his job and due to fly to London to attend his daughter’s wedding. Juggling work and family and at risk of losing both, he bumps into Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), an air stewardess whose life is plagued by unsuccessful blind dates and a paranoid mother who thinks her neighbour is a serial killer. The two strike up an instant rapport but each other's personal lives threaten to prevent what could be a beautiful relationship. Last Chance Harvey has its feet firmly entrenched in the conventions of the romantic comedy and as a result feels rather formulaic. However, it's elevated above most of its genre counterparts by the two lead performances; not only is it a joy to watch these talented and established actors together on the big screen, it’s also refreshing to see an alternative to mainstream cinema’s obsession with youth.
