Watch the Stranger Things Season 2 Trailer

A seriously creepy promo for Stranger Things season two landed online last night promising a terrifying new monster, the return of Eleven, and Mike, Lucas and Dustin dressing as the Ghostbusters

There’s something strange going on in the neighbourhood of Hawkins, Indiana, and it might have to do with the portal to another dimension that was never dealt with at the end of season one of the Duffer brothers' hugely-popular 80s set sci-fi Stranger Things.

We get our first glimpse of what might be going down in the second season with a nightmarish new trailer that aired during last night’s Super Bowl. After opening with a vintage ad for Eggos, the breakfast treat that the show’s pint-sized telekinetic heroine Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is hooked on, the clip goes on to suggest things are going to get very bad for the kids who vanquished the demogorgon last time around.

The mood of the 36-second promo is certainly ominous. "The world is turning upside down," says the ad, and things aren't looking too hot for our heros. Young Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), the kid who went missing in the Upside Down, looks seriously disturb from his time in the other dimension and is under surveillance.

Our fave middle-school geeks Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), meanwhile, are dressing up as the Ghostbusters for Halloween, but the terrified look on the latter's face suggests they might be required to bust some demons themselves. And then later, in a sly riff on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, we see a huge creature on the horizon that confirms Dustin has every right to be terrified.

The good news is, however, that Eleven is back! We see her open her eyes at least, but heaven knows where she ended up after taking on the demagogue at the end of the first season. David Harbour, who caused a ruckus at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last week with a barnstorming anti-Trump speech on behalf of the Stranger Things cast, is also back as maverick police cheif Jim Hopper and seems to be rocking an Indiana Jones look.

The bad news is, we still have nine months to wait to see what this tantalising promo all means, as it’s revealed we’ll be getting the second season in time for Halloween. Until then, there's always a second round of Stranger Things season one, which is currently streaming on Netflix, or you can take a look at some of the films and shows we suggest as a stopgap until series two comes along.
