Watch Ryan Gosling and Lykke Li duet in Song to Song

Feature by The Skinny | 16 Mar 2017

A clip filters through from Terrence Malick’s Song to Song featuring the Drive actor and the Swedish singer dueting on a Bob Marley track

The latest piece of cinematic revery from Terrence Malick, Song to Song, is set within the heart of the Austin music scene and is overflowing with cameos by famous musicians. Legends like Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and former Sex Pistol John Lydon all show up, as do The Black Lips, Tegan and Sara, Florence Welch and Big Freedia. Other acts, meanwhile, now share the ignominy that many actors who’ve worked with Malick have experienced: they've ended up on the cutting room floor. Hard lines Arcade Fire, Iron and Wine and Fleet Foxes.

Swedish star Lykke Li has made it into the final cut. In the film she plays the ex-lover of BV, a struggling musician played by Ryan Gosling. A new clip from the movie shows Li and Gosling’s characters reconnect in a dreamy scene that sees them singing a tentative duet of It Hurts to Be Alone by Bob Marley and the Wailers.

The clip showcases Malick’s singular style as cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki’s camera gracefully spins and twirls around the actors. We also see Gosling show off some of the piano skills he demonstrated in La La Land, swapping a baby grand for a casio keyboard. Take a look at the clip in the player below and read our review of Song to Song here.
