We get a first look at The Neon Demon, Nicolas Winding Refn's thriller set within the fashion industry, starring Elle Fanning and Keanu Reeves

Fresh from being confirmed as a candidate for the Palme d'Or at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, the first trailer for Nicolas Winding Refn's follow-up to Only God Forgives arrives online.

The Neon Demon stars Elle Fanning as an aspiring model entering the cut-throat world of the fashion industry. As the trailer reveals, though, she's no wide-eyed ingenue. “Some girls crack under the pressure,” Refn favourite Christina Hendricks says to Fanning's character in the trailer. “You: you’re going to be great.”

The trailer suggests that Refn is continuing the heady style of his last two Ryan Gosling-starring efforts, Drive and Only God Forgives. We follow Fanning's character through neon-lit nightclubs, glamourous hotel rooms and mirror-walled studios as we hear dialogue like, "You know what my mother used to call me? Dangerous." The mighty Cliff Martinez once again provides the synthesiser score.

As for plot, Refn keeps it all pretty opaque at this stage, but he has describe The Neon Demon as a "horror film about vicious beauty” and there's a distinct Dario Argento vibe to some of the images. The film reportedly co-stars Keanu Reeves, but we couldn't spot him in the 90-second promo. If you can, let us know, and give us your thoughts on this first glimpse.
