It’s less than a month until Darren Aronofsky’s new film, mother! (that’s an all lowercase title, complete with exclamation mark) makes its debut at Venice Film Festival, and we still know very little about it – even with a peek at its first trailer.

Jennifer Lawrence stars, that much is clear, and the Oscar-winner dominates the chilling 30-second promo. We also get a glimpse of her co-star Javier Bardem, who doesn’t look too happy at the end of the trailer; eagle-eyed viewers might also spot Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris.

The official plot synopsis provided by the film’s distributor, Paramount, isn’t much help. “A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence,” it reads. One thing is for sure, it looks like Aronofsky is back in the mode of Black Swan and Requiem for a Dream with this psychological drama.

We’ll find out more when mother! receives its world premiere at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Until then, take a look at the trailer in the player above.

The stunning posters for the film have also been revealed. They take inspiration from the sculptures by talented Edinburgh-based artist Jessica Harrison. We interviewed Harrison in 2014, where she disscussed her twisted ceramic ladies – dainty female figures that have been horribly mutilated. Take a look at the awesome posters inspired by her work below:
