Hollywood director David Fincher is back working on the small screen with new drama MINDHUNTER, which follows two FBI agents studying the murdering psychopaths who will soon become known as serial killers.

Based on the book Mind Hunter: Inside FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, by John Douglas, the 70s-set show asks the question: “How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks?” Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany play the FBI agents interviewing serial killers in an effort to get to know how they tick. As the creepy trailer suggests, trying to get inside the head of a psychopath isn’t necessarily good for your own psyche.

This true-life tale calls to mind Thomas Harris’s novel Red Dragon (the basis for Michael Mann's Manhunter and TV show Hannibal), in which an FBI agent has to think like a serial killer to catch him, but a cursory glance at the trailer reveals the aesthetic – all sinister camera moves and pea soup lighting – is pure Fincher. The show particularly recalls his 2007 thriller Zodiac, another true-life drama set in the 70s centred on a serial killer.

As well as Fincher, the first season of MINDHUNTER also sees directors as varied as Asif Kapadia (Senna, Amy) and Andrew Douglas (the remake of The Amityville Horror) helming episodes.

MINDHUNTER arrives on Netflix 13 Oct; watch the trailer in the player above, or on YouTube here.
