Twin Peaks: Agent Cooper returns in new trailer

Twin Peaks' main protagonist, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper, makes a return in the revival's latest mysterious teaser trailer

Showtime have now given us an official date for the new series of Twin Peaks: it’ll premiere on the US channel 21 May, with Sky Atlantic screening it in the UK simultaneously. What the upcoming revival might be about, we still have no idea, but Lynch’s haunting and mysterious teasers keep on coming.

The latest does give us our first glimpse of Kyle MacLachlan's return as Special Agent Dale Cooper, the FBI detective with a deep love for fine coffee. The 30 second trailer shows some eerie images of the woods surrounding the Pacific Northwest town of the show’s title, lots of fog, and a car’s headlights twisting down a forest road. Then, towards the end, MacLachlan's Cooper steps out of the gloom and towards the camera – all the while Angelo Badalamenti's familiar Twin Peaks theme plays over the images.

The best hints so far about what we can expect from the new series came last week from Showtime president David Nevins, who says the show will be a “pure heroin” version of Lynch’s original Twin Peaks, and Lynch himself, who suggested the story of Laura Palmer’s last seven days “is very, very important” for these new episodes

Series three will premiere 21 May with a two-hour episode, and in total the season will run 18 hours. Many characters from the first two series are back (including Lynch himself as FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole), but there will be plenty of new characters too, with the likes of Laura Dern, Trent Reznor, Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried and Michael Cera all appearing.

Watch the new teaser in the player above; Twin Peaks' series premiere screens on Mon 22 May at 2am on Sky Atlantic, with a repeat at 9pm.
