Based on the Nobel prize-winning novel by Imre Kertesz, 'Fateless' recounts the true story of 14-year old Hungarian Jew Gyuri Koves' horrific experiences and eventual survival of the Nazi concentration camps, and the subsequent effect on his consciousness after he returns to Budapest. At a cost of $16 million, it's Hungary's most expensive feature, and boasts a haunting, emotive score by veteran composer Ennio Morricone. But something has been lost in the translation from page to screen and the script fails to provide a true understanding of Gyuri's introspective reactions to his incarceration, and post-liberation, offers little to elucidate his responses to family and friends. The result is a film that offers no climax or resolution and ultimately no real hope for Gyuri's future. [Colin Chapman]
