The 2016 edition comprises 3,269 shows which will be staged across 294 venues in Edinburgh this August.

The Fringe society's new Chief Executive Shona McCarthy said: "At its core the Fringe is an open-access festival, which welcomes anyone with a story to tell, and for that reason, amateur and professional artists from around the world continue year after year to come here to share their stories, hone their skills, create new opportunities for themselves and their work, and celebrate the joy of live performance."

Speaking at the launch McCarthy also mentioned she'd enjoyed testing the brand new app developed by Glasgow-based tech company Screen Media, set to become available in July and which promises to make navigating through the programme easier than ever.

But the printed programme remains an indispensable resource and show directory for art-lovers. It can be collected free from 5pm today at numerous locations in Edinburgh and Glasgow, a selection of which are listed below.
