Fred Macaulay: Legally Bald

Article by Barrie Morgan | 12 Aug 2011

At the Fringe it helps having 22 previous years experience. It also helps being Scottish, likeable, a radio/TV personality and, it goes without saying, but you gotta be funny. Fred Macaulay has all of the above and more.

The crowd is expectedly overflowing and anticipation in the alarmingly big Stand 3 is high. Macaulay enters and begins a set he could have easily phoned in. But such is his proclivity, he hasn't. His acerbic wit is welcomed by all as he delves into some topical routines as well as some boyish jokes about pornography. He strikes an assured balance between confident, seasoned professional and glorified jester. It's very hard not to like his style.

With general audience banter a good starting point, Macaulay quickly welcomes everybody into his world. He tells anecdotal stories that span a wide audience and offer a satisfying punchline. It's evident from his show he's comfortable in his own skin and this shows. A performance that will easily warm the coldest cynics and caress the hardened fans expectations.

Seamlessly entertaining and enjoyably astute.

Fred Macaulay: Legally Bald, Stand 3, Aug 5-17, 19:50. Tickets £10.
