Call of Dudey @ Just the Tonic, The Caves

Dude Looks Like a Lady impressed at the Leicester Comedy Festival in February, and now the sketch group show promise in Edinburgh

Call of Dudey is a pretty traditional hour of sketches from the Dude Looks Like a Lady crew; easy watching, good natured and with decent laughs.

There’s a lovely chemistry between the group and you can clearly tell they’re enjoying themselves; some great ideas are played out (a monologue based on the Coen brother' Minnesota-based Fargo concept), there's a sprinkling of social commentary (Bresco), and we now know the best place for a date (Wahaca on the South Bank, obviously). Also, we still can’t get over their ‘hilarious fishing cartoons'.

A more prominent framing device weaving in between sketches, instead of shielding the show at either end, may have been beneficial. Although the surprise of the performers sat in the audience is a nice touch, squeezing through the audience awkwardly doesn't make up for little else happening. The writing could be a little tighter and contain a bit more bite, but Dude Looks Like a Lady show potential; for example, there's something sweetly dark about the aforementioned Minnesotan moment. It's these strands of material that could be developed further.
