Meet Double Denim for a 90s rendezvous at Gilded Balloon

Double Denim

Michelle Brasier and Laura Frew are throwing an anarchic late-night 90s-themed party, and we’re all invited. Come in double denim and in a mood to party and expect dancing, party games and some very silly sketches. We’re treated to all the outdated pop-culture references we can stand as the duo take us through their plan for a party that would make even Britney Spears herself proud. A classic buddy comedy, Double Denim explores the relationship between our two hosts as well as just our own relationship with balloons and brightly-coloured straws.

Amid the madness there are some really impressive turns of musicality and dance, all set up to wave two fingers at the overly highbrow art world. As Brasier and Frew talk about their own adolescent years, their childish personas slip occasionally to let us see a little darkness at the edge of the sequin-studded hotpants, before being swept up again by the weird party spirit. The awkward turns of phrase that make up the show’s youthful charm jar a little at times, but with the right attitude this is a raucous night out, and a great hour of nostalgia and glitter that shuts out the world outside.

Double Denim, Gilded Balloon Teviot (Billiard Room), until 28 Aug (not 14), 11.15pm, £5-11
