Top Ten Events 23 Feb-1 Mar: Errors, FrightFest + Malcolm Middleton
PICKS O' THE WEEK
The Arches, Glasgow
Sat 25 Feb, 7.30pm, £15 here
The rather ace Margins Book and Music Festival returns for its second year, with a schedule that has got us (and our Books editor) mighty excited (full listings here). On Saturday evening Malcolm Middleton, under his semi-instrumental Human Don't Be Angry guise, launches his new album, showcasing tracks for the first time with his full band. And, rather neatly, support comes from his Arab Strap partner Aidan Moffat, who will in turn be accompanied by his longtime collaborator, Bill Wells. Now, that's a dream trio right there. Middleton also promises to play some old classics from previous solo albums, more's the joy. We'll be down't front hoping for a bit of No Modest Bear, from his 2005 album Into The Woods. Have a listen: here.
Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh
Sat 25 Feb, 7pm, £6 here
Edinburgh music blogger Stu Lewis (aka The Tidal Wave of Indifference) hosts his second showcase gig night down't Wee Red Bar, for which he's bagged Glasgow up-and-comers of the superfuzzy, tropical thrash-oot variety, PAWS (pictured), for a headline set, alongside Edinburgh School for the Deaf, and Sebastian Dangerfield. And, a little on the hush-hush, we hear there's also to be a set from Broken Records' frontman Jamie Sutherland, kicking things off with a short solo set of new songs and old.
Patriothall Gallery, Edinburgh
Sat 25 Feb-Tue 6 Mar, noon-6pm (Tue-Sun), Free
The Artist Book Group – set up by Jenny Smith in 2009 (whose studio the group meet in six times a year) – come together once again, working in a variety of mediums to explore the process of book-making in all its myriad glory; including fold-up, pop-up, cut-out, and journal-style gems, alongside a selection of wall-based works. There'll also be regular interactive workshops encouraging participants to make their own books (3/4 Mar, £8), live wall writing, live readings from the Words On Canvas group, and an artist in residence each day doing their book-making thing.
Flying Duck, Glasgow
Fri 24 Feb, 9pm, £6 advance here (£8 door)
The Pin Up Nights crew return for their penultimate party, pulling out all the stops for another of their notorious 'ladies' nights, for which there'll be a trio of burlesque acts causing havoc – including a certain Mr Tom DeLish (most probably semi-naked), alongside live headliners Kid Canaveral, coming out of second album-writing hibernation specially, and Wild Beasts taking on DJ duty for the night. And we'd suggest diary-ing their final party, where new Chemikal Underground signings Miaoux Miaoux will be amongst the guests, and y'all can also get behind their campaign to get Jarvis Cocker on the decks (there's a petition and everything).
10. Pub Bazaar
Dagda Bar, Edinburgh
Sun 26 Feb, 3pm, Free
We end on a whimsical note as Dagda Bar play host to the quite delightful-sounding village-fete-in-a-pub-setting that is Pub Bazaar. It's essentially the kind of event that Sundays were made for, going all out with competitions for best miniature garden and best fruit/vegetable creature (make of that what you will, people), live pom-pom making, a bringalong your own homebaking policy, live acoustic sessions from a selection of local talent, and, yes, all the booze you can tank. Amen.
£150 iTunes vouchers: This is when we wish we could enter our own competitions! Alas, we wish you all well in winning £150 of lovely, music-filled iTunes vouchers. Enter here.
