Joey Page: Golden Peacock Hour

Review by Amy Johnston | 31 Mar 2014

Dressed dapper, sporting a blazer, broach and trilby, Joey Page turns his hour into a surreal and fantasy-filled story time. ‘What-if’ scenarios are relayed with such detail, he convinces the audience ‘it-could-happen.’ Pauses between descriptions allow the crowd’s imagination to fill the gaps to Joey’s tales, with muffled chuckles that the mischievous comedian appreciates.

The fast, unpredictable show guarantees laughs as Joey combines quick-fire jokes with an impressive memory,  incorporating audience details into his routine. There’s an element of endearing self-consciousness as he offers us a preview of some new character ideas, including ‘Candle-Hands’ and ‘Cup-Hands.’ The simplicity of his delivery highlights Joey’s talent for audience connection and drawing a laugh from both simple and elaborate material.

Staying faithful to his audience, he informs the crowd of his thought-process behind swapping jokes about trams for buses. The show isn’t a re-hash of a previous Fringe performance; it’s fresh and tailored to Glasgow.

With an hour of breathless tangents, Joey successfully reigns himself back in with a callback to win the crowd; there’s some professional organisation behind the madness.
