David Kay 'Sconetastic'

Review by Simon Pattullo | 02 Apr 2012

With his eccentric train of thought, David Kay rambles from scone preference and pyjama thievery to his suggested Masterchef menu, and the material suits his innocent charm. Alas, this delivery is initially engaging but after an hour does begin to grate a little, and becomes somewhat laboured and predictable.

This is probably since he seems distracted tonight, spending more time looking to the floor and fiddling with the mic lead than developing his ideas, and it's a wee bit disappointing.

His endearing nature does in the main keep the crowd onside, but when the opportunity to retrieve a fumble is discarded - he declares he can't be bothered - there does seem to be a lack of conviction. The way the line is delivered, in that sing-song drawl, gets a chuckle in return, but there's a feeling that he's not quite on his game.

He himself admits he's in a strange mood, and it's a pity since there are some good ideas in here which are just not fully exploited. Another night, a more intimate venue perhaps; maybe that would sort it.
