Nik Coppin: Caricatures
Coppin wanted to be a comic book artist when he was a kid but dropped out because art school seemed too pretentious. DC's loss is comedy's gain, and now this journeyman comedian has found a way to mix his passions, by building a show of anecdotes based on a series of caricatures he's drawn of people ranging from Kylie Minogue to his own dad.
Coppin talks fast and sometimes can go a full ten minutes without using a full stop, and in a way that's his undoing here. He's blended the anecdotes together seamlessly so each leads naturally into the next, but it makes for something of a one-note show that could use a bit more variety.
His best moments are when he breaks off script a little and starts bantering with the crowd, eliciting gems like a chat about Jesus fucking dinosaurs and an argument with a middle-aged woman who takes offence at Coppin's suggestion that Spiderman could beat up Wolverine. Coppin is a funny, engaging man with a strong comedy pedigree. Doing straight standup, you could watch him all night but this particular show still feels a bit sketchy.
