John Scott: Totally Made Up

Article by Bernard O'Leary | 19 Aug 2011

It must be fun being married to John Scott. He's got a keen eye for observational humour and successfully mines his daily life for gags, even a recent holiday to Egypt during the revolution. You can imagine his wife, wishing he'd take their impending death a bit more seriously and stop just writing down ideas for gags.

Totally Made Up is essentially an extended stand-up set from Scott, with some novel ideas like the Egyptian stuff, as well as a few more mundane routines about PMS and the use of 'cunt' in the Glasgow vernacular. It's firmly in Scott's safety zone but he is very safe in there, with stories of quick-witted responses to BNP members in Wigan showing what a good club comic he is.

A brief glimpse of his Cooper Christ character at the end demonstrates that there's more to Scott's game than these crowd-pleasing routines. He does please the crowd though and if it's not exactly inspiring stuff, it is definitely a good laugh. He does enough at this show to ensure that people will seek him out at comedy clubs for the next 11 months. Here's hoping he takes a few more risks when 2012 rolls around.
