Jamelia - Walk with Me

She deserves to take herself more seriously as a female artist and aim higher than pop starlet material and image.

Album title: Walk with Me
Artist: Jamelia
Label: Parlophone
This is an ambitious album for a mainstream pop offering, for the most part sexy and sassy, fresh and fun. Jamelia's voice is in fantastic, mature form as she romps through a lively mix and mash of genres. Something About You is a slick funkrock mash, but there are several good candidates for singles that are even better: Go is quite grown-up soul, with great lyrics and Get Up, Get Out is positively stomping. Do Me Right is a bizarre mash of electrobollyhop, but it works, while Brave tries at sampling The Stranglers and Depeche Mode. Beware of The Dog is disappointingly cheesy – an edgier, meaner take would have been interesting. Jamelia's voice has immense energy - she deserves to take herself more seriously as a female artist and aim higher than pop starlet material and image. Good quality pop for the kids, and a choreographer's dream. [Wendy Martin]
Out now.
