DJ Derek @ Bongo Club, 4 March

Who? There's no shame in being a newcomer to the sounds of DJ Derek as word spreads through the verbal grapevine.

DJ Derek turns seventy next year, yet despite – or some might say because of – his superior years he continues to “rock de ‘ouse” better than any other white guy in reggae. Undeniably there is a certain amount of novelty in the combination of his adept Jamaican patois emceeing and conservative attire: he will be found rocking cardigans or waistcoat and tie with the pride and propriety of a man who is unashamed of his several years spent in accountancy. But his highly involved and respected status as a member of Bristol's Jamaican music scene is not to be ignored. He is literally an icon of the southern circuit, wiping the floor with booty-shakin’ dancehall, soul, funk, reggae, rocksteady and much more. His almost total absence from online media may explain why it’s taken so long to get him to make his Edinburgh debut; for years, his rep has hung almost solely on the verbal grapevine. Support from 93 Feet East’s King Toby makes this unmissable. [Rosie McLean]
