The most anticipated night of the year, and the one most likely to end in crushing disappointment as the sheer pressure to have a good time overwhelms you, you drink all the booze by eleven and end up passed out on the floor by the time the bells toll. Luckily for you, we're here to help see that doesn't happen, by providing a short guide to the best nights at which to see in 2011

Edinburgh:

Karnival & Cabaret Voltaire present TooManyDJs' Hogmanay Bash
Cabaret Voltaire

Karnival and Cabaret Voltaire team up to offer one of the biggest showcases of Edinburgh talent this year: ToomanyDJs. No less than 25 of Edinburgh’s finest DJs descend upon Cabaret Voltaire to offer a truly eclectic mix of dance music. Residents from the likes of Fuse, Axis, Bedbug, Pulse and The Sugarbeat Club to name but a few shall be banging out some of the freshest cuts of techno/electro/dubstep and house that Edinburgh can provide.

Musika Hogmanay: Booka Shade - Live at The Picture House

For anybody attending the festivities in Princes Street gardens there can only be one place to go for the afterparty: Musika at the HMV Picture House. Expect some of the biggest names in tech house and techno to be taking to the stage to celebrate the New Year: Booka Shade, Tim Green and Gary Beck. This is sure to be a busy night, as German tech house legends Booka Shade shall be performing a full live show that has been stunning crowds all over Europe.

Edinburgh’s most intimate club and without a doubt my favourite venue in the capital shall be hosting a night rammed with residents who have been gracing the decks over the past year. Expect to hear a mix of indie, new wave, italo, electro, techno, and dubstep from Sicknote and This is Music residents. If you like your clubs dark, sweaty and electric then Sneaky Pete’s is without a doubt the place to spend your New Year's Eve.

Departure Lounge Hogmanay Special
The Caves

If you're looking to avoid the huge crowds and want to experience something truly different then Departure Lounge at the Caves will tick every box imaginable. With a stonking 42 acts ranging from a live Afro-Latin orchestra, brass band, dancers, samba drumming troupe, DJs and a hip hop PA, there's sure to be something for everyone looking for an eventful night. Be sure to check out Boom Monk Ben in the Bassline Cave for a twisted journey through all things bass.

Substance NYE: Surgeon + Neil Landstrumm
The GRV

Having recently been dubbed ‘arguably the finest techno DJ in the world’ by Fact magazine and having consistently been at the forefront of techno since 1995, Surgeon is without a doubt one of the finest ambassadors of techno. Expect a truly jaw dropping set from Surgeon who blurs the lines between DJ and live performer. As if that wasn’t enough, native Scot and techno monster Neil Lindstrumm shall be gracing the decks with his ever-evolving musical style that explores new avenues in all things bass.

Arches New Year's Eve: Pendulum (DJ set), Kissy Sell Out and more

It comes as little surprise that one of Scotland’s most popular venues should be hosting one of the biggest lineups in the country. Drum 'n' bass leviathans Pendulum will be playing a special set alongside MC Verse. Radio One DJ extraordinaire Kissy Sell Out will be playing some of the best in rave, electro and dubstep. Be sure to catch up and coming Scottish act Clouds who recently released an EP with Fake Blood’s label Blood Music and have a forthcoming release with Tiga’s Turbo Recordings.

Slabs and Stay Plastic NYE Party 2010
La Cheetah Club

New Year's Eve sees La Cheetah club host a double size celebration over two floors with Slabs of the Tabernacle and Stay Plastic. Both nights have decided to bring back their favourite acts from previous parties to offer a real night to remember. Slabs of the Tabernacle host the downstairs with David Vunk (head honcho of Moustache Records) playing a rapid mix of house, disco and italo. Stay Plastic keep the upstairs on lockdown with the help of Photonz, a Lisbon duo have been making waves with a fantastic release on Dark and Lovely and appearing on the Red Bull stage at Sonar.

Cadenza records New Year's Eve showcase at the Templeton Carpet Factory
West Brewery

Most people look for something a little less ordinary for their New Year celebrations. On that count Tic Tac Toe certainly obliges. The growing techno party takes Hogmanay revellers to the unique and architecturally stunning surroundings of the Templeton Carpet Factory, making a statement with the location alone. The line-up for the night is equally impressive, featuring the minimal and deep house grooves of Cadenza Records pairing Mendo and Lee Van Dowski. If that doesn’t have you enthusiastic enough, the likes of Supermax’s Billy Woods and Affi Koman of Sunday Circus will join residents to ensure the scene is set for a memorable start to 2011.

Optimo presents Hogmanay 2010
The Glasgow School of Art

This year we find Optimo returning to its roots, paying homage to the soon to be rebuilt Glasgow Art School Union. This is a chance to experience a true end of an era with a night and venue that have given so much to the Scottish Club scene. Optimo could have booked a headlining artist but have instead opted for a more personal experience; focusing their entire budget into making this night one of the highest production shows on NYE. The assembly hall shall be hosted by Optimo residents JD Twitch and & JG Wilkes with friends from near and far playing downstairs.

Melting Pot NYE Party with DJ Cosmo & Cottam
The Admiral

Scotland’s longest running and most prestigious disco night has a fantastic offering in the form of DJ Cosmo and Cottam. New Yorker DJ Cosmo, who runs her own label Bitches Brew is a party DJ to the very core and will play anything that works on the floor. Having been one of the few people with the privilege of playing The Loft regularly it can be guaranteed she knows how to keep the floor moving. Be sure to also check out DJ/producer Cottam who has influences ranging from soul to techno seeping in and out of his sets.
