Club Highlights – December 2010

Feature by Calum Sweeney | 01 Dec 2010

Christmas can be a period of difficult decisions, trying to choose presents for distant relatives and discerning friends, with few ideas or options on offer. Thankfully, there are no such problems when it comes to clubs this month – there’s practically a night for every window on your advent calendar, and one that ought to please everyone on your Christmas shopping list. Maybe even your Granny.

The Arches is going to be just a little hectic at the start of December. You can’t really ask for much more seasonal generosity than Tiga (5 Dec), A-Trak, Cassius & Busy P (10 Dec), Jaymo & Andy George and Jack Beats (11 Dec) all over the space of seven days. If that week doesn’t leave you recovering until the new year, then Death Disco follows up on 18 Dec with Zombie Nation headlining alongside Scotland’s own electro export Burns.

I AM aims to continue to redefine student clubbing each Tuesday night at the Sub Club, balancing its commitment to young Glaswegian talent (such as Mia Dora and PEACE), with the club’s first major guest. Appearing alongside this month’s Glasgow talent (which includes the debut of exciting producer AC) will be London’s The Rogue Element on 28 Dec. His diverse breakbeat sound should sit well in the club, which blends everything from minimal techno to dancehall reggae into the one popular package.

Speaking of mid-week Glasgow clubbing, Killer Kitsch are busy in December. Not only have they got Drop the Lime and Wafa visiting the Buff Club on 7 Dec, but they’re also having a long, sweaty threesome with Muck and Dirty Noise at Stereo on 3 Dec. Indulging themselves at this time of year, they’ve joined forces to bring back a favourite from recent months, Italian funk artists Reset, with support from Ado. For this collaboration they’ve even scored a 4am license, only adding to the occasion.

Along the M8 there’s just as much on offer in December, especially for those of the dubstep persuasion. Innuendub are treating Edinburgh to two major pin-up artists with Joker and A1 Bassline in Cab Vol on 10 Dec. Joker’s brand of grime influenced dubstep has established the young man at the forefront of the genre and his recent Sub Club performance proved that his talents aren’t limited to production – he performs behind the decks as well.

The techno heavyweights are also in Edinburgh over Christmas. Musika bring the Dutchman with the Detroit connection, Joris Voorn to the Liquid Rooms on 18 Dec. Voorn headlines a packed line-up, with the ever eccentric progressive and tech house of Danny Howells supporting alongside Edwin Ooosterwal, Derek Martin and Jamie McKenzie. On Boxing Day, Scotland’s techno royalty are out in force in the capital. Slam and Silicone Soul, the kings of the Scottish scene, take to the Cab Vol, to demonstrate their mighty Soma sound.
