DJ Chart: Answer Code Request

German beatsmith Answer Code Request (aka Patrick Gräser) gives us a glimpse into his musical inner workings via a selection of tracks that influenced his debut album

Feature by Daniel Jones | 23 Jun 2014

Patrick Gräser is from the same small town near Berlin as Marcel Dettmann and Marcel Fengler, so it seems like fate that his Answer Code Request alias should end up on the Ostgut Ton stable alongside them. Debut album Code follows a whirlwind year which started with his first public appearance and ended with a Berghain residency. Enough said.

Here, we get to grips with the inner workings of the Answer Code Request machine, as Gräser serves up an intriguing platter of musical tastes that goes far, far beyond apocalyptic techno.

Boards of Canada – Palace Posy [Warp]
This is one of my favorite tracks from Boards of Canada's latest album, Tomorrow‘s Harvest. It sounds so enchanting and soothing to the ears and just what I need when I unwind after a day in the studio or need new inspiration. Also it feels perfect with this track when I leave Berlin to take a break from city life. I could easily recommend the whole album to anyone for its timeless and atmospheric feel.

Shackleton – Touched [Woe To The Septic Heart!]
This track is from The Drawbar Organ EPs and has everything you could expect from an album, made with more than just club play in mind and boasting some impressive sound design. 'Touched' is one of my favorites from the album and it inspired me in the making of one of my tracks titled 'Haul'. You have to listen to this track out loud, gives you that spacey feel.

Aphex Twin – Heliosphan [R&S]
Never to go missing from my collection. In fact, all of Aphex Twins‘ tracks are timeless and I could pick any one of them as a great influence on me. Always pushing boundaries, this man's productions are a class of its own. The breakbeat and melody combination are beautifully executed, like an amazing story with a happy ending. Richard D. James all the way.

Link – Amenity [Dawn]
When I listen to this, it feels like a time machine‘s trip back to the 90s. This track is ambient by nature. The warm synth-melody with tender light pads and strings made this piece a classic favorite of mine. Dreamy-like for the first 3.30 until the kick sets in. I thought a lot about this track during the making of my album.

Professor Genius – Time of the Assassins (Steve Moore remix) [L.I.E.S.]
I've been playing this a lot in the clubs and usually as a closing track in my gigs. One of the masterpieces that I never leave home without. I think Steve Moore (half of Zombi) is perhaps one of the most underrated artist ever. An extraordinary track. When I first heard this track back in 2012 at Hardwax, it blew my mind away! Steve Moore made a fabulous rework of the original.

DJ Hype – Weird Energy [Suburban Base]
Growing up with Drum & Bass, this track was one of the first few releases I bought way back with my brother. A prominent figure in the history of D&B and Jungle, Kevin Ford needs no further introduction. The track begins with bells chiming and vocal samples and after 30 seconds the drums kick in and one cannot resist to dance. I love the breaks in that tune, reminds me a lot of the old school raves. Energy and consciousness describes this – it's a mega tune!

Burial – Untrue [Hyperdub]
It's no doubt that Burial is one of the prolific producers of this century. His releases are a major influence on my production and as such for my new album. Worn by melancholy synth lines with drowning vocals that made the tracks so longing, like dying away in an endless distance. A kind of post-apocalyptic tune, obscure and full of mystery.

Shed – The Lower Upside Down [Ostgut Ton]
My favorite album from the Ostgut collection. His production from beginning till now remains diverse and adventurous, and I support hugely all of his different aliases. When I heard this track for the first time, I had the feeling that he brings back the 90s Detroit vibe in disguise of his own style. Quality in this.
