Each year, the Scottish Book Trust offers a £2000 grant and a tailored package of mentorship and guidance to a new group of emerging Scottish writers under their New Writers Awards scheme. As well as receiving mentoring from writers and industry professionals, the authors each receive training in public relations, social media and performance, and the opportunity to showcase their work to publishers and agents. They also get to attend a week long retreat at Cove Park, which will provide them with time and space to work in idyllic surroundings.

This year's winners were announced today. Malachy Tallack (pictured), from Shetland, a singer-songwriter who has supported the likes of King Creosote, recieved an award for Narrative Non-Fiction. Alison Gray, self-published author Orla Broderick and Martin MacInnes won awards for fiction, while the awards for Poetry went to Bridget Khursheed and Em Strang, and awards for Children’s and Young Adult Fiction went to Juliette Forrest and Lindsay McKrell. Separate awards for Scots Fiction and Poetry went to Philip Murnin (for fiction) and Ann MacKinnon (for poetry). Finally, the Callan Gordon Award for New Writing went to Jonathan Durie.

Authors and industry experts Doug Johnstone, Jenni Fagan, Jen Hadfield, Keith Gray and Scots Makar Liz Lochhead were the judges for this year's awards. Will Mackie, Head of Writer Development at Scottish Book Trust, commented: “We’re thrilled to be supporting these eleven exciting new talents through our New Writers Awards programme. Our support for writers gives them the opportunity to enrich their craft, develop professionally and heighten their awareness of the writing world. We’re very much looking forward to working with this diverse and fascinating group.”
