Hot Off the Comics Press: Villains, Pigs and Nerve

It's going to be incredibly tough for the next few weeks to look past 'the new 52' titles DC has on offer each and every week - which is a far too long a list to give full coverage. The reaction to most titles, so far, has been critical and commercial success with a host of titles selling out faster than a speeding bullet.

As the Superheroes are reborn and the world is reintroduced to the icons they thought they knew, let's take a moment to remember the reverse spectrum, the villains. Suicide Squad #1 by Adam Glass, with a great cover by Ryan Benjamin, is out this week and gives us back our team of death-row super villains. So if you want to get reacquainted with the new look Harley Quinn, Deadshot, et all this is the place to start.

Another place to get on board a new series is Pigs #1 from Image Comics, by Nate Crosby and Ben McCool. This ongoing series is the story of  “a second-generation KGB Cuban sleeper cell, activated & assigned to overthrow the U.S. Government through a series of kidnappings, assassinations and acts of terrorism.” With a stylishly cool cover by Scottish artist Jock, its hard not to be tempted with issue one: Hello, Cruel World.

Comic Book Wednesdays don't need to entirely centre around first issues, and another indie alternative this week comes from Optic Nerve #12 from award-winning shortcomings cartoonist, Adrian Tomine. This is the return of an iconic series and with it comes a chance for new readerse, as well as old, to embrace this unique, humourous and observant multiple short story format. Look out this issue for 'a brief history of the art form known as hortisculpture', a truly fresh tale of horticulture and 'amber sweet' - a tale of mistaken identity.
