Happy Birthday Mr. America! or Captain if you prefer. Yes this year sees the man in red, white and blue turn the ripe old age of 70, and to celebrate the occasion Marvel have released a star spangled Captain America #616. As they gently ease readers into new chapters of the super soldier’s life before the film comes out in summer, this issue sees acclaimed writer Ed Brubaker and artist Mike Deodato take Cap into Russia to bail out his on trial former partner Bucky. The issue will be packed with other short stories from WWII to today, bringing all new readers up to speed.

Talking of movie friendly, DC has its own summer blockbuster just around the corner, so they will be keeping a close eye on its tie-in titles. Though not as accessible as the Captain America short stories, the War of the Green Lanterns rages on in Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #8. This issue is complete with some lantern on lantern fisticuffs as Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner throw down. Story wise has been a gem of a series so far; complete with epic moments and just enough tension to leave you in clammy hand anticipation of the next issue.

In the indie corner it’s DC’s independent publisher Vertigo who put out the always excellent American Vampire #13, by Scott Snyder this week. The title continues its stories throughout the era’s mantra and this new instalment is a good place to jump in for new readers. With the fresh start coming courtesy of a super soldier free WWII in the Pacific Theatre, now is the time to get on board to this alternative Americana vampire fable.
