Hot Off The Comics Press: Picks Of The Week 3 May

Blog by Thom Atkinson | 03 May 2011

This Saturday 7 May may be Free Comic Book Day, but you will still have to part with your hard earned coin for the very latest releases hitting shelves this week. So without further ado, here are three titles you will be reassured by in your transaction of cash for quality (hopefully).

After all it’s not every week that Marvel’s resident title saviour, Brian Michael Bendis, resurrects an almost forgotten hero. You may have seen Moon Knight as part of Steve Roger’s Secret Avengers, but the lunar powered crusader has struggled to maintain his own title – until now. Moon Knight #1 with pencils and cover by Alex Maleev (and a variant cover by Brian Hitch) sees the Eisner award-winning team reinvent the mythos of Marc Spector, with the same swagger they brought to the man without fear in their revitalised Daredevil run.

For every new title you may feel like taking a chance on, there is a safety zone of titles that nearly always leave you in a glowing satisfaction of your purchase. Doom Patrol #22 is definitely one of these choices, and Keith Giffen’s run as writer has been a fun, inventive and alternative look at the DC universe through a very different perspective. With its constant rota of Cliff ‘Robotman’ Steele, Negative Man and Elasti-Girl, Doom Patrol is always a solid recommendation.

Sometimes you don’t just want to read about the good guys doing, well, good things and instead want to see how the other side lives: that is the focus of Boom StudiosIrredeemable #25 by Mark Waid. This week’s indie alternative dares to ask the question: what if the world's greatest hero decided to become the world's greatest villain? Described as a “twilight of the superheroes”-style story, issue 25 is a super-powered prison fight, the like of which you’ve never seen before.

Wednesday is comic book new release day this May the 4th (be with you) 2011.
