Hot Off The Comics Press: Picks Of The Week 28 April

Blog by Thom Atkinson | 28 Apr 2011

Though there may be many a worthy mortal’s tale to be told in comic book stores this week, there is but one Norse God gracing the big screen who demands to be heard across all platforms. So as Kenneth Branagh’s Thor opens across the multiplexes, where else can you find the God of Thunder?

The answer, inevitably, is in Mighty Thor #1 by Matt Fraction, with pencils and cover by Olivier Coipel. With a triple of variant cover’s available, including a Thor movie cover, this new series marks a new age for Thor and a welcoming invite for new readers to get to know the Odinson.

Fraction, of course, is no stranger to Thor as he has brought the character back into credibility with his work on the Thor title and is currently also writing Marvel’s Fear Itself event, which sees the prince of Asgard shackled in chains. It’s worth noting that Mighty Thor is not a tie in to Fear, but a stand alone beginning which sees Thor and Sif journeying into the World Tree, crossing time and space and coming face to face with the cosmic Silver Surfer.

Also appearing in Marvel’s ongoing series Journey into Mystery, Thor is being heavily pushed as Marvel’s man of the moment. Not content with several comic book titles, a movie and a spot on Marvels flagship animation Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes, Thor and his mischievous brother Loki can be seen in the motion comic Thor & Loki: Blood Brothers and the upcoming animation Thor: Tales of Asgard premiering on Blu-ray, DVD and digital download on 17 May.

With Captain America: The First Avenger next into the spotlight, get your Thor fix while you can.
