GET ZAPPED
Right, hold steady. July has arrived and with it comes that joyful glut of musical festivals – this week starts with Kelburn Garden Party and rounds off nicely with T in the Park. But here at Cyberzap towers we're sparing a thought for all you poor buggers who couldn't get a ticket, so read on for plenty of other things to do – including an all-day mini music festival at Mono, complete with beer garden action. T in the What?
PICKS O' THE WEEK
MUSIC
Sun 4 Jul, 1pm, £20
Glasgow's very own haven of cool, Mono, is taken over for the day by a new mini music festival, going by the name of Commercial Alternative. Y'know the drill, it'll be all about those alternative bands that yer Granny's never heard of. We're talking The Phantom Band (pictured), 1990s, Comet Gain, Remember Remember, Astral Planes, and more (read our preview here). Plus, the outside will be transformed into a covered beer garden. Perfection.
CLUBS
Sat 3 Jul, 1pm, £10
The Bigfoot parties never fail to fill our hearts with colourful sparks, combining sets from top beat masters with outdoor BBQ-ing fun. This month they've got a headline slot from Edu Imbernon (pictured), who is basically a 21-year-old global DJ phenomenon and label owner. Bastard. There will also be a set from local techno spectacular Hans Bouffmyhre, and some live mural painting. Preview details here.
PERFORMANCE
Sun 4 Jul, 4pm, £12.50 (£10)
We like Ghillie Dhu, they mix old-fashioned twee with just the right amount of new-fangled cool. This weekend they're staging a summer-holiday style 1950s ball, with pleasure palace worthy performances from Miss Leggy Pee and the Academy of Burlesque. Plus amusements, competitions, vintage-themed shopping, and a crowd who take dressing-up very seriously. Whip out the speedos.
MUSIC
Kelburn Castle, Edinburgh
Fri 3 & Sat 4 Jul, £48 (weekend ticket)
We come bearing good news; there's still some tickets left for the graffiti castle's annual eclectic bash. You shall go to the ball! The line-up is pleasingly lo-fi, with Broken Records, Meursault, and Panda Su amongst our top picks, alongside DJ sets from the likes of Radio Magnetic and Tom Middleton. There's also the added joy of a tennis-court-cum-dancefloor, and glorious tree-topped surrounds. Oh, and a frickin' painted castle!
FASHION EVENT
JRD Trust Building, Kirkcaldy
Sat 3 Jul, 11am, £1 donation
If anything's worth a little jaunt to Kirkcaldy, then this is it: a collection of Scotland’s brightest makers, creators and collectors shall gather in a 1920s dancehall for a retro-style village fête. Right, let's break that down into the individual gems... There will be vintage clothing stalls, a catwalk show, tiers of homemade cake, jam scones, handmade crafts, plus jewellery from our very own Fashion Editor.
MUSIC
Sat 3 Jul, 7pm, £5
We've been on this merry bunch ever since a demo of their 2007 single Smash Hits landed in our inbox, dishing up some lyrical food for thought on what to do when you find out that your new bird "...loves the McFly"? It's uplifting pop, with humorous, scrawled on the toilet wall, style lyrics. And their first LP is pretty damn good. Read our verdict here. And go see 'em launch it live with Come On Gang and The Scottish Enlightenment.
MUSIC
Fri 2 Jul, 8pm, £8
Having made the leap from bedroom-laptop-tinkerer, New York indie oddball Luke Temple's new ensemble project, Here We Go Magic, is a foray into fairytale electro, complete with acid-trip vocals, washes of xylophone, and pitter-patter percussion. It's different – but, like, actually-really-rather-good different. Ya get? Dream pop devotees form an orderly queue.
ART
Opens 2 Jul, daily (except Monday), Free
Glasgow artist Scott Myles' solo exhibition kicks off this weekend, showcasing a unique series of constructed screenprints which incorporate familiar objects into both two and three dimensions. He will also exhibit a selection of his fluorescent text works that explore language and generic signage. Thought provoking stuff, with just the right amount of humour. Go see.
CLUBS
Tue 6 Jul, 11pm, Free and Wed 7 Jul, 11pm, £4 (£3)
Dropping by both the Buff Club and Sneaky Pete's this week is Yolanda Be Cool, the Australian sweat duo responsible for recent 1950-sampling clubbers' fave We Speak No Americano. You will have heard it. You've probably danced to it. Heck, you might even like it – it topped the Danish charts for fricks sake (ahem).
ART
Sun 4 Jul, noon, Free
Right, pay attention. This is art at its most powerful, as it's essentially taking on the mighty Donald Trump. The American tycoon has plans to build a £750 million golf-course-cum-holiday-park on a scenic Aberdeenshire stretch of farm. In response, artist David McCue has set up this one-day art instillation, featuring a series of paintings and a specially commissioned interactive sculpture, alongside correspondence and artifacts that relay the ongoing battle. Art from the heart, if ever there was.
