Tight guitar work, even tighter harmonies, and, considering their indie-country sound, the likelihood of superlatively tight trousers, It Was Not Serious is a thoroughly pleasurable and finely crafted pop song from The BDIs. Hailing from Southport has probably already led to innumerable Beatles comparisons, but the now London-based trio demonstrate several influences from their Scouse forefathers. Love Me Do-era harmonica, twisting Drive My Car riffery, and eerily John ‘n’ Paul style harmonising punctuate the track, a batch of solid hooks indicating this is more than mere imitation. In following such a tried and tested recipe, it’s unsurprising to see The BDIs produce a pop delight. [Joe Barton]
