Beck, MGMT and Devendra Banhart to rework classic albums

Posted by Jenny Baldwin, Fri 19 Jun 2009

Beck has recruited friends to form the ‘Record Club’, an informal group which will re-record classic LPs in one-day sessions. The singer has announced a series of free cover albums, each recorded in just 24 hours with nothing rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. His musician friends include MGMT, Jamie Lidell and Devendra Banhart, as well as producer Nigel Godrich. It seems Beck isn’t busy enough. Having released three albums in four years, he is still itching for more. His overhauled website, Beck.com, will offer a new Record Club song every week, free of charge. The first album in the series to be re-worked is The Velvet Underground & Nico. The first song from the project, perennial mixtape staple Sunday Morning, can be heard now, complete with grainy footage of the studio session, on Beck's website.
