Alan McKim - Living in the City

Posted by Chris Buckle, Fri 26 Jun 2009
**

Alan McKim's vocal delivery on Living In The City haphazardly treads the fine line between passionate and forced. Musically, it's anonymously catchy fare that neither offends nor impresses, but McKim’s vocals tip the balance, and not for the better. After an accomplished verse, his rough Scots burr mutates into an unpleasantly over-zealous, vowel-heavy chorus that sounds exaggerated and ridiculous - presumably not the intended effect. On Colours he goes one better, somehow stretching the word ‘night’ to an impressively over-wrought thirteen syllables. It's frustratingly clear that McKim is not without vocal talents; it's just a shame he currently uses them in such an undisciplined way.

Seen him play a few times, and can't make out a word he is singing, mostly out of tune, due to him screaming. I hear he is writing with some top writers but not his own band mates!!!!!! nice! Good luck to him, he is going to need it and so will his band.

What passes for commentary on this website seems only to be degrading, derogatory slander from Mr Buckle who seems to have lost his faith in the face of era defining music. Buckle seems to have trouble making up his mind how his review wishes to read, noting in the same breath the insistence that it treads the line of passionate before crudely defining Mckim's music as anonymous. I have heard McKim once and was truly astounded by what could be described as a 'tour de force' in musicianship, leaving me simply overwhelmed by the end. Further telling insight by Buckle suggests his own superior tone by failing to describe Mckim in an informative manner, stooping merely to point out the number of syllables used in a word. Ray Lamontagne's classic BBC4 session rendition of barfly sees Lamontagne utter the word 'Nothing' at least 12 times, does this make him repetitive? Unimpressive and badly researched piece of writing which displays more about Buckle's literary merit than Mckim's music.

Pete Brown obviously doesn't exist Alan so wouldn't worry about that. Anyone with the blind vanity to write that comment would have used caps on the inital letters of his name. Would suggest the possbility of the first two comments being from the same person. Good comment from banging lester although if you know the McCormack guy may I suggest a rethink of your current friendships! lol

Deeply offended by that last comment mate but I will forgive you as is my nature. I have known Alan for some years now and I think the guy has done well with his combination of talents and deficiences but what stands out for Alan is the visual performance, the emotive delivery and the fact that he is a thoroughly decent, hard working, well grounded, humble, polite and decent human being. These things go a long way in this business and some would do well
to look for this in themselves and adhere to the old adage...'if you can't say something nice...or funny...or sarcastic...then say nuthin!'

The reviewer has a right to his opinion although the more eloquent and educated among us may note the literary linguistic and anylitical deficiences. However A Buddie is, as McCormack states, A FUDDY as is Mr Brown. The issue is undisputedly penis related. Spoke to Freud earlier and he agreed. How simple the winning of arguments is when you can call on the dead for back up!

I saw Alan McKim recently in TUT's on recommendation of a friend and concede that it was a powerful live performance and like most music / artists it's extremely subjective. I loved it and so did others...the review is based on 1 demoed song and anyone extending the critique beyond this - as by Brown and Buddie - must have other agendas and are blantantly and sadly none too bright. God bless them and may their kids have parents. By the way, spoke to Jung and he said Freud was a Fud. I'm forced to agree with Jung on this one folks!

Although I have never heard or seen Alan McKim I have to agree with A.Buddie and Pete Brown. Worth noting though that I too suffer from certain physical deficiencies, have little faith in the world, am loved by no one, except perhaps my local grocer who relies on me for income, and am still a virgin, though only technically. Hope this helps!

Ok People this seems to be getting out of hand. This forum is surely intended for thoughtful and intelligent debate, response and commentary, not for these childish rantings. I read the review and it's a take it or leave it affair. The Initial two comments from Brown and Buddie though are indicative of a unfulfilled, disenchanted, disenfranchised generation of people who spend too much time as avatars on flatscreens than actually intergrating properly with the humans around them. They probably spend a disproportionate amount of time with pets.
Personally I blame Thatcher, for most things actually, but on this occasion I bLame Neitsche, who ,if it came to it, would take a right hiding from both Freud and Jung at scrabble, chess or arm wrestling. What would you pay to see that eh!

For all the love in the world
Under ashen trees
Can lighten the pulse of hooves
Kings and quenns appease

Over bracken hill on winters crest
Following the lofty quest and then
Forever chasing ghosts

But the journey surely has to end
If that was all
Left on our own
Left to our own devices
You all once more but I...

Fair shout bud, everyone is entitled to their own thoughts, tis just the anonimity that gets me...I come from a world where those who stand up to be counted often get stoned and Ah'll take as many hits as is goin. I too dislike a lot of people but rather than go around sites lookin for negative things to add, I generally do the opposite....Might be more fun your way...aye bugger it...negativity ya bass!

I'm a little confused here...can I still comment on the review at this late stage, seems to be going down the track of dating service, chatroom, cannae get a burd in the flesh sort of thing. The reviewer was a bit harsh and the song maybe a bit rough round the edges. The initial two comments were needless and the rest superfluous. On the other hand, I have heard nothing but great reports about Drew's sexual prowess and his ability to engage in a myriad of conversational topics

I also know Drew, though not well enough it seems. Drew and Stevie, really!

McKim is such a seriously talented guy, sure, Everyone has off days and I've experienced some of these gigs which were not quite as impressive as they should be but the majority of them are fantastic. What if he was just hungover? I am today and my ability to perform at work is seriously depleted, surely as a musician there is a certain leniancy granted towards such a state (see the state that is Amy Winehouse). It seems to me that there is a highly emotional response to this review albeit about juvenile "We hate it when our friends become successful" issues, not gonna mention your girl issues guys ;) Alan McKim is an amazing performer and talented songwriter. That is my opinion. I'm outting it out there, I'm entitle to it...but then what do I know...I'm hungover.

I suggest you check some of his other videos on you tube before deciding his fate or see him live.

Dear A.Girl,
Don't know where you get the impression that we have any issues with Alan. He is our friend, we love his music and his desire and we do anything we can for him.So much so that I am currently locked in a dificult custody battle with his father. As for our girl issues, Stevie and myself are in stable and hopefully lifelong relationships and are having a laugh at my expense it seems. Juvenility is the new senility sweetheart and is less taxing on the NHS. Think we'r safe from criticism on that count. Anyone fancy a nice bit of System of a Down or Rolf Harris does Zep?

Quite frankly I'm very impressed with the response to this Review by Mr Buckle and credit much surely go to the reviewer himself. Buckle is an unusual name and one I would spontaneously associated with...and forgive me if I'm way off the mark here....something to do with a shoe...or perhaps a belt. Historically speaking the named buckle derives from the French word bucle (with an accent of course) which loosely translated mean to join together and was a common name amongst the higher echelons of French society in the late 1800's. Mess with them and Louis would have had your head off in a whim. Mr Buckle may still have contacts in the decapitation business so my advice would be to leave that stone unturned. While we're on the subject of geology...anyone fancy a nice wee bit of Leonard Cohen?

Welcome back Pete and spot on!! I've hd a great laugh at this thread and the obvious lack of maliciousness is clearly apparent. In all honestly McKim is more of a habit with me and have found it difficult to move onto other more accomplished performers. Picked this thread up from a friend( No More) and think I've stumbled onto a current major flaw in our already fragile society. This thread began with criticisms of a demo by Alan McKim and progressd to a witchhunt against the initial perpetrators and the reviewer, then a criticism of a guy called Drew's sexuality, some bona fide back up support from Alan McKim's fans. This surely suggest that we are a trivial race with no capacity to sustain a thoughtful debate on an ordinary issue without dragging it to places and depths which can only be described as infantile. Shame on you you one cell wonders! Bearing all that in mind anyone up for a nice wee bit of Sandy Shaw does Zappa?

I do consider him a friend but regardless of that I enjoy his music as do countless others. The Gig upstairs at Boho will remain special for many that witnessed it and those that have watched him develop over time.
Music is a personal preference and not every single person will like every single style of music, you would like to think that even if they do not they would behave in a more grown up manner.

Although seethingly jealous about his lustrous and seemingly uncontrollable head of hair I'm a huge fan of Alan's music and couldn't give a monkeys fudge nugget who or what he writes his songs with. I personally enjoy the 13 syllable singing of "night" in Colours and wake at nights craving another rendition of the stonking kazzoo solo in Stop Right There.

Was at the gig in Soho / Boho / Buddha...whatever it's called this week...and it was properly special.

say what you like about Al but the performance live is what it's all about for me and they're always top notch. From the quiet sunday afternoon gigs he used to play in the wee boozer on the High St (name escapes me) to the foot stompathons in King Tuts. Opinions are indeed like arseholes and unfortunately, and like my girlfriend, you're going to hear mine......the boy has real talent and is going places. He'll still be about in years to come when Mr Buckle et al are veering head long into a mid-life crisis and drastically regretting not sticking in a bit more in music class.

As for Drew.....I don't know the man but think I know who he is from the gigs. He has the look of a ferocious bedroom warrior so my advice to the ladies would be...tread with caution, but enjoy!

He has more passion, enthusiasm and talent than listening to one demo could possibly sho. And would hope that Chris Buckle would be open minded enough to 'check out' one of his gigs and possibly write a more comprehensive and accurate review.

Alan is an individual, talented, energetic, poetic performer..and if said reviewer wants to climb the evolutionary/promotion ladder, he should by fookin Cif, with bleach, and maybe get to one of Alans gigs and then detract or pontefract his current review...As for Brown- Nose and Quasi-Buddie, Brown how claims to be the man that took 78 NIN gigs to realise they were a "Bit loud". I know I a nobody but you unfortunately still believe that what you write bears any significance to anyone else on this planet. You are a shite songwriter, singer and a pointless human being and your contribution here at my expense may in fact be the focal point of your otherwise insignificant life. I haven't always given bands the best deal but have never asked them to sell tickets to make me money which a lot of you seem happy to do for others in this business. I've made major mistakes and let people dowm but not by malicious intention...and all this will MAKE ME A BETTER PERSON. You on the other hand will remain an unfulfilled FUD. Good Luck, and while we're on the subject of poor wee souls....anybody fancy a nice wee bit of ska from the Aphrodisiacs?

I think this comment section is a bit ridiculous. Think the review was a bit mixed up as though the reviewer couldn't quite make up his mind on the subject.

I love Alan's music 100%, saw him in a couple of pubs in paisley, but demos can sometimes be a bit dodgy compared to the finished/live versions, so since I've not heard what the reviewer heard, I can't comment on his opinions.
All I suggest is someone buys this guy a ticket to Alan's next show!

A critique is just that.........

I think lessons have been learned by all here, except spelling lessons....Some on this thread can stimulate unhealthy thoughts, some of it can provoke postivity and optomism, some on one hand have obviously been phished on popular social networking sites, and cant get into there account, letting tittle tattle and derisory remarks procrastinate from every orifice instead.....

Think about someone who has came on this site for the first time to see Mr. Buckles review, who, AT LENGTH, has review some of the biggest names in Rock/Pop/Rawk/Poop. Now some of these gigs were in wonderful venues, where unicorns tears fill glasses of free, complimentary drinks in Media. I think that the length of said review goes to show that there was no "16 M.J's((thats music journalists!! now now Ed.)) round a stereo cassette player, pontificating on what new word to invent, to describe this new sound eminating from the magic magnetic tape thingy player sitting in front of them. The length of review, therefore, indicates that for the "Skinny" Magazine, they still had afair bit of space to fill and proceeded to do what every good writer does in these situations......Picks from the Magic, and fabled box of DEMOS!!! All be it written on the back of a ciggarette box it was slightly confusing.

This will go down in history as:

"108 words that changed the world"

why dont we save the space on this page for comments about alans music, and the Drew-hater can set up a separate discussion board elsewhere for their obvious insecurities about drew mccormacks acheivements, both in and out the bedroom ;). Better still why dont they grow some balls and /or facial hair, and either deal with their issues face to face, or better still wipe the keyboard clean, open the curtains and do something useful with their life :)x

Good day one and all!!!! I was passed onto this post by a few friends, and i must say......... This is one of the best laughs i have had in a long time. How a simple review of an artist's OLD........! demo, can turn into a free for all slagging match which forgets, the reasons why we are here! I have witnessed the phenomenon known as Alan McKim a couple of times in Paisley, and i cannot stress how wrong the reviewer is, We must remember though...... the demo that was reviewed was very old and is not how Alan is now as a performer. Things change over time, and Alan def has grown into a jaw dropper. I left Paisley (Hurraggghhhhh!!!!!!!!) a while ago to move away for various reasons, and this comment page has reinforced some of the reasons for my departure. Paisley has lots of lovely people living in its wee grey grasp, but it also has certain people who cannot get over the fact that some people may just be more popular musicians than they are, and maybe try to bring people down lower than they are!!! I have witnessed it many times in Paisley, and all i have to say is grow the **** up you so called Paisley Buddies!!! Buddies??????? Haaaa! I played the Paisley music scene for quite a few years, and i can remember all these wee faces/minds dissecting everything you did as a performer on stage, every breath, every move etc, instead of enjoying the vibe and the show!! Its a bad day when envy hinders reasons to enjoy. To me....... Paisley critique music scene team RIP, as im sure your having a wonderful, beautiful day.

For all the Paisley folk that may know me, you are the BEAUTIFUL people i talked about.

As for Drew McCormack, wee boaby springs to mind, or so im told!!!!! You should have kept your mouth shut Elaine!!! Shame on you!!!

Oh what a laugh i have had this wee short moment in time. Today planet earth...... tommorow............ the universe!!!!!!! evil laugh to fade...................

If any spelling or grammar is wrong on this post, my answer to anyone who would like to pull me up on it, a wee kiss my bum in your general direction!!! in a nice way though Pol!!!!

All the best,

from what i gathered from talking to the man himself, he sent the demo (which is the key word here) as the only full band recording he had, to see if the skinny wud like to attend his first full band gig at king tuts. it wasnt ever going to be released as a single, and so for it to be reviewed as such was maybe a surprise! maybe u shud attend one of alans live gigs and base your opinion of him and his music from that x

Pray tell mater, why does this chap feel the need to enlist his chums in order to bombard a music mags forum? Because he had one bad review that's why! Apparently you can't critise his beat combo. Springsteen, The Beatles, Stones, Oasis,WET WET WET, they all had to take the good with the bad but not young Mr. Alan. All he wants is plaudits. Shame as he may need The Skinny one day. Why has he asked the mag to change the pic at the top of the page? Could this be a publicity stunt ? Fans -ever get the feeling you've been had?

Each reviewer is entitled to his opinion, but this opinion is just way off base. The music industry and the world in general needs more better music and Alan is providing that. Have we really gone so far down as a nation that we'll pile into the shops to buy the latest shitty cover by the latest moron who's been paraded on TV on reality shows but turn our backs on someone who's producing wonderful, emotional songs? And as for the reviewer, if you have to focus on the amount of syllables used and take it to racial levels by having a go at the accent instead of mentioning the actual music, then you have no business whatsoever reviewing music. Alan has considerably more talent as a musician than this reviewer has as a critic.

Long live Christopher Charles McDonald!!!

Is this self publishing, or possibly a publicity stunt????

Jings civins help ma boaby!!!

Good is good, and best is better........

The world dies around us, and we (well....... some of us) are worried about banter on "The Skinny"

Shame on thee..............

Ears are for listening, sometimes enjoying, and sometimes not. Why is it, that for some reason this listening ability is connected to an audible critical production??

If you listen to a 1-4-5 chord progression played in a blues style, slight reverb, sometimes chorus, but with clean orientation, lots of people enjoy? Play the same sequence of chords blues style, but with heavy distortion, gain, metaliser blah blah blah....... people enjoy also?

Is it possible that we have the right to enjoy what we wish any time we wish, and have the right to dislike what we wish when we want? Unfortunately this life has created the beast that is sometimes known as the critic? (Can they create anything creative apart from the lonely spoken tone? i may have to eat my words if you can, therefore i shall if need be) they are sometimes nice, sometimes not so nice but Is it a good thing or a bad thing? I think by the way we have all reacted to this review, it must be a good thing, that we have such a device to egg us onwards. But........ and i stress but....... it may make us gleam with sheer shininess, but it may make us quiver in our own shoes, boots, hi heels, slip ons, wellies, loafers or bare skin.

We let you in, your there anyway, do we really care, should we worry, is life that shallow?????

oops............ my converse just let in some water there!!!! (And there not even the ankle length ones........ yikes.... you know the ones im talking about? those really dear ones that go past the wee knobbly bits between your shins and your feet?)

Im sure that anyone i know who enjoys Alans music, or their own music, or any form of music, listens, and gets lost because it moves them in ways they did not know could possibly happen. Is that not what music is about??? Losing yourself for a moment or two... or three.... or four......?

My goodness, live and let live........... and then decide. x

There have beEn snipers since Day on in Varsova when the Jockrock threads went off the scale giving Drew, Crig Richardson and Chris Moore bundles of abuse...all from Paisley folk when it was Paisley folk they were trying to provide services for. Sure they've made money along the way...but I remember playing in Lush for Drew and Stevie and getting sixty quid when only ten people were in. It was the same in Varsova. AND I KNOW FOR A FACT THEY EVENTUALLY RAN NIGHTS IN LUSH WHEN ONLY THE BANDS GOT PAID AND THEY DID A RAFFLE TO PAY THEMSELVES. Why dont we all go and look at the other reviews the skinny has to offer then we can contribute trite and useless commentary on them...a change of scene perhaps may inspire a better level of literary worth. C.S.Lewis

There's a recurring theme in this melange of poorly constructed opinions, exemplified by the following - "Each reviewer is entitled to his opinion, but this opinion is just way off base."

In other words, everyone is entitled to their opinion, unless you don't agree with it, and then it's all heresy and lies.

Good one.

Hi Guys n' Gals, took me a while to get through all this chit-chat, not used to chatting on forums and such as im a one fingered typer. Lot's of this makes interested reading, first of all would like to state ive worked with Alan for years now and if anyone ask's Alan he'll tell you he agree's with lots of Mr Buckle's comments.... the recordings that are being talked about were posted to Mr Buckle were the only recordings Alan had with a full band. Alan was horrified when he discovered these recordings were being reviewed, as they were just a rough guide incase Mr Buckle was coming to his gig in Tut's. The demo's themselves are very rough (and cost a lot of money). After reading all these comments its very encouraging to hear all the positive comments from Alan's fans, and I would normally have no problem whatsoever with negative comments but can't help feeling that there is a hidden agenda behind some of them. I know Drew McCormick very well and know that he is loving this..... all this banter is right up his street! I also know that Drew will be laughing the loudest at all the nasty stuff aimed at him. let's not beat about the bush the 3 names that have been mentioned (the guys who are hiding behind their curtains) have only been mentioned because some of this seemed to be getting a bit personal towards Alan (not just musical criticism)and this is not the first time. The demo that was mentioned earlier was done by 2 of the names mentioned, who then went on to manage him.... THIS DEMO IS KAK! These guys tried to smother Alan's creative talents and blamed everything on everyone else, and to cut a long story short Alan parted company with them and from that day have tried there hardest to thwart Alan's career in any way possible. Im not going to start slinging individual instances around but they sure are mounting up!

You's guy's know who you are!!

Time to put all this behind you guys and move on. Alan definatly has and is now moving in the right direction no thank's to you! The music business should be about positivity not negitivity you's guys spend a lot of time being negative, Alan on the other hand is very positive no thanks to you's.

Rather than slight Alan on 'The Skinny' etc, maybe a wee phone call would be more manly and less sneeky, don't know what your problem is it seems that you like to dish it out but when names are mentioned yous guys go crying to your mummys.

Mr Mckim is a very hard working, very talented young man (not being a brown nose) and everyone who knows him knows this, he's also a nice guy (not up his own ass like the afore mentioned) so get off his back and give him peace.

And you never know one day you may create something half decent with your new found positive creativty.

Got blisters on my finger now, anyone wanting to carry this on give me a phone im telling the truth as i see it.

My phone number is easy to get its in the public toilets under Drew's

anybody want to wait for rain to climb a hill and listen too Joe Dolce.

i agree. the reviewer is enititled to his opinion.
he is also required to share his opinion, otherwise he wouldn't be doing his job.

in my opinion, alan is brilliant. x

There's a lot of unjustified accusations on this thread so I thought I'd stick my oar. I quote from Alan's own website:

"
BAD Review From The Skinny
Recently I sent out some demos to various members of the press in order to hopefully get them along to my last full band King Tuts gig. One of which being the music paper, The Skinny. I didn't think they'd actually review the demo! This was a shame as it's a recording I did a couple of years ago, and one which I'm not particularly proud of but it was the only full band demo I had"

So there we have it. ALAN sent the demo out not some shady characters from his past. He fucked up - there is no conspiracy to get him.

Personally, I think he should have sent a demo of Colours or, even better, Useless but that's just me.

On another note - who else thinks that Alan is better by himself than with the band?

Dave

Christ, i'd waited a week or so to plunge into this debate, and it seems i waited too long. Too much gibberish! I've known Alan since i first saw him make me look shite at singing and playing on a camping trip in Kilmartin Glen. Since then, i got the gig booking bands at Pivo Pivo and have always had time to find gigs for him, he is an exhilarating live performer. Alan McKim and Passenger still rates as one of my best nights in Pivo, tho mostly because we all went out and got blazing afterwards ... Anyway, not sure if this has been mentioned here, but Alan will be doing a solo showcase at Pivo Pivo on Monday 28th September in Pivo Pivo (best acoustics in Glasgow, apparently, ok i paraphrase, cos i was hungover when we spoke about it ...) so for believers, critics, charlatans and stalkers, there's no better chance to make your mind up for sure. Also playing will be Belfasts Lucky 8's, and some other special guests as yet unbooked.

IMHO anyone who can make a Kazoo cool is a bone-fide legend, no question.

Take it easy

Gary Pivo

What a bunch of muppets on here!!!!....This is supposed to be a reply to an absolutely crap & unfair review of a superb & talented singer/songwriter. I strongly suggest to the author of this inane dribble that he goes and gets off his fat arse and see Alan + group in full flow. I currently live down in Dorset but have still managed to attend Alan at Russells, also at King Tut's so why can't you???. You surely live alot closer than me yet you write some piece of crap from behind your desk.
As for the rest of you wannabe chatroom freaks on here.....open up a private room & get a life. This is a fantastic man future we are talking about here not some sad excuse to try to prove your manhood. Don't take this review to heart Alan, we ALL are behind you and we ALL know how good you really are. Take care mate!!!!

Just to say there's been a change of plan for Alan's gig at Pivo Pivo, he'll now be playing on Wednesday 2nd September, alongside the brilliant Mike Rosenberg of Passenger (www.myspace.com/passengerofficial) and possibly Dan Lyth (http://music.danlyth.com/) tho Dan isn't yet confirmed. Should be quite a night, and a great way to settle the debate over Alan and his music (not that that's exactly what this "debate" has been about!), in the company of other brilliant musicians. Email garymckenna@barpivo.co.uk if you're interested in getting some tickets for this! Wednesday 2nd September, doors 8pm, 3 Quid! Pivo Pivo, 15 Waterloo St, Glasgow, G2 6AY
