Charlie Ross's TV Times

Posted by Keir Hind, Fri 03 Apr 2009
**

Charlie Ross’s TV Times was billed as a look at how television affects all of our lives, but after a few clips were shown the show became solely about the comedian’s life.

Ross is a gay man who grew up in Glasgow, which is surely a good source of comedic stories, but there just weren’t enough laughs here. He has strong movement and a projection, but his act just didn’t produce any solid jokes. Instead, he told the audience about various humourous scenarios which were allowed to peter out.

Ross tried to make up for this with gimmicks, like a couple of video clips, a basic parody version of ‘All That Jazz’ about football and forced audience participation. I was dragged on stage briefly at one point for no good reason, and was only too glad to be allowed to leave. There was a good idea for a show here, but it needed a lot more work towards a lot more laughs.
