With a uniquely melancholic but jubilant southern-gothic sound, honed through years of intensive touring, Brooklyn-based quintet O’Death grace the stage of Glasgow’s Nice ‘n’ Sleazy this Sunday to promote third LP Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin (review here). For fans of the growling vocals of Tom Waits, Neil Young or Two Gallants, O’Death have an unrelenting intensity and fervor on record which combats anyone foolish enough to dismiss their macabre-country-punk-rock hoe-down as merely a kitsch joke. Dark vocals with gypsy violins, swinging drum beats and a down-home twang give their dirge a sombre yet uplifting feel that is always incredible in a band when experienced live. Let them do that to you at Sleazy's this weekend, with every alt-country elegy they can muster. [Lauren Mayberry]
