There are a few rules for TV-to-movie transitions that should be obeyed. One, your favourite characters should all be present and correct. Two, said characters should go on an emotional and/or literal journey, usually denied them in weekly episodes, allowing a better understanding of their personalities and emotional states. Three, the status quo should be returned to by the final frame. The Simpsons Movie offers loyal fans all of the above, forcing America's first family away from the safety of Springfield by way of ecological disaster. While all the regulars make welcome appearances as the plot (what there is of one) unfolds, the question of why a film was needed after 18 years does remain. Luckily, a more prominent role for Ned Flanders adds some welcome poignancy as realisation dawns on Homer about what it means to be a dad, finally proving that father d'ohs best. [Jonathan Melville]
