It's that 'difficult' third series....

The return of Doctor Who in 2005 revolutionised Saturday night telly, introduced the Daleks to a new generation and made Billie Piper a star. Three years on and everything has changed. David Tennant now flies the ship and Piper has gone. But has it all worked? Kicking off with the now traditional Christmas episode, any pretence at deeper meanings is dispensed with in a standalone romp starring Catherine Tate. The season-proper begins with Judoon on the moon, bloodsucking grannies and the introduction of new girl Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman). It's an irresistibly fun introduction to the next 12 episodes. While the first half of the season is enjoyable, it's not until Human Nature that Tennant really gets to shine, making the series as vital to British TV as it ever was. As the Doctor realises what it means to be human in 1913 England, the heart(s) of the series has never beat louder. Throw in a trip to the end of the universe, the return of the Daleks and a two-parter where the Prime Minister turns out to be an alien (as if) and you have a glorious way to spend a weekend.
