Brightblack Morning Light - Brightblack Morning Light

Posted by Garry Thomson, Tue 10 Jul 2007
Slack blues and funk riffs are traded over the top at a rate that feels as though it should be measured in ice ages...
****
This, their debut release, finds Brightblack Morning Light playing their own brand of psychedelic free-form blues that slowly seeps into the pores of your skin. Sounding like a stripped-bare Spiritulized - if the drugs did work - this is more than just drone rock. This is the sound of a thousand notes recorded, slowed down and lengthened until they appear like the last flicker of a dying heart beat. The bass resonates to an almost unfathomable level while slack blues and funk riffs are traded over the top at a rate that feels as though it should be measured in ice ages. It is hard to imagine that this was recorded by only two people, such is the rich and fluid nature of the work. The sounds can at times be eerie but the hypnotic bliss which captivates is the perfect soundtrack for summer evenings and the moments when dusk slowly turns into night. [Garry Thomson]
