E.D. Sedgwick – We Wear White

Album title: We Wear White
Artist: E.D. Sedgwick
Label: Dischord
Release date: 19 Nov

Justin Moyer's (El Guapo, Antelope) E.D. Sedgwick project has undergone a number of makeovers, having changed from a duo to a solo act and now a fully fledged band consisting of Moyer and an all-female backing band. Despite the additional members, it's a fairly bare bones operation with minimal overdubs. There's never a lack of attitude across We Wear White's brief 30 minute running time; in fact there's a feisty garage rock feel to most of these tracks.

From the sharp, bitey male and female vocals to the red and white colour scheme of the record sleeve, the White Stripes come to mind more than a few times (especially on opener Dirty), but there's shades of grey here too. Despite the humourous lyrics, Moyer's manic delivery does tend to get a little overbearing, but thankfully there's the addition of some much needed change of dynamics, like on the genuinely surprising, bluesy title track. Proof that sometimes it pays off to get reborn.
