“You’ve gone and found yourself a friend,” sings Charlie Ward aka King Post Kitsch on the Rhodes-driven Closing Time, and if friendship is built on melodies like these then this can be considered a life-long relationship. The feeling of familiarity runs right through The Party’s Over, a complement of how well-crafted a collection this is.

Doting on 60s-era psychedelic pop, Fante’s Last Stand recalls The Zombies, while Walking On Eggshells would do Ray Davies proud. But this is more curious and infectious than just a plain old homage. On occasion the no-frills production can leave the listener yearning for a bit more sonic-oomph, but given that Ward is a professional sound engineer by trade, it’s presumably all as intended. Some like their steak medium, some like it rare, but it’s still a bloody steak after all. The Post Kitsch Party is just getting started. [Alan Souter]
