The Vanishing Horizon @ The Zoo

Emotion In Motion

Feature by Mark Harding | 08 Aug 2010

Idle Motion is getting plenty of attention for its stage settings - highly ingenious combinations of suitcases and people. Yes, the show is as tricksy as a box of monkeys, but don't assume that it lacks heart.

IM invests every second with fun and feeling as we follow a couple's brief separation as the girl travels to Africa and the boyfriend stays behind to record a programme about female aviation pioneers. It's not an epic premise but the cast of six use it to create geographic and emotional breadth. They follow very different journeys back through history to contrast modern aviation with the experiences of the pioneers, and ponder the dilemmas of female freedom – the sacrifices required as individuals, and the impact of their choices on the lives of others.

IM brilliantly captures the feel of an experience – such as night flying or international hotel rooms. The script has charm, wit and insight. And all the cast have an uncanny ability to inhabit a character – or invoke a whole widescreen cinema's worth of backdrop – with a single glance.

Even if, for this reviewer, the ending wasn't quite emotionally true, the show is great entertainment, a lesson in ingenuity, and a boundary-pushing display of creative energy.
