Tue 6 Dec: Ingleby Gallery and Stills

Why not get your fix of Art Basel on this side of the Atlantic by visiting David Austen’s satellite solo presentation for Ingleby Gallery’s Miami Beach booth at their Edinburgh gallery. Austen’s work spans several media including painting, drawing, film and sculpture inspired from a variety of sources as well as the artist’s immediate surroundings, particularly his chance encounters with or remarks on ordinary everyday happenings. The show is on display until 16 Dec by appointment.

The Jill Todd Photographic Award exhibition celebrating the work of talented of young photographers is on at Stills Gallery. The award, set up in 2012, is an annual competition open to Fine Art and Photography students from Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

This year’s exhibition will feature work by the three winners: Mads Holm, Linda Conroy, Emma Levy, and by six highly commended contestants: Calum Douglas, Nadia Gabriel, Mat Hay, Kotryna Ula Kiliulyte, Arthur Montgomery and Sam Wood. The exhibition runs until 21 Jan 2017, everday 11am to 6pm (Stills is closed for Christmas from 21 Dec to 4 Jan).

Wed 7 Dec: Sound/Image symposium at CCA

The CCA hosts a symposium titled Exploring the Human Sensorium through Sound/Image in the cinema from 2-6pm. The programme includes talks, live demonstrations and screenings, which will continue from 10 am to 6pm until Sunday. The event marks the opening of the Azimuth: Sound/Image presented by the University of the West of Scotland’s School of Media, Culture and Society. The work on display by Scottish and Japanese artists explores the concept of narration in relation to sound, image and our senses. Symposium tickets are free, but must be booked in advance here to secure a place.  

Thu 8 Dec: The Lighthouse

Head to the Lighthouse this evening between 6-8pm for the preview of Alan Kitching: A Life in Letterpress. The retrospective, which will run until 5 Mar 2017, spans Kitching’s six-decade career in typography and is curated with the publication of a monograph of the same title. Kitching is a prominent figure in printmaking and letterpress typographic design working both on commission and limited edition prints made with metal and wood letterforms. Fri 9 Dec: CASS Art and 16 Nicolson Street

Final year Painting and Printmaking students from Glasgow School of Art take over CASS Art’s exhibition space at the back of their Glasgow store location for a display of new and older small works and prints for sale. All proceeds will go towards funding goals for the students’ degree show catalogue. Pieces are priced at £25 and bargain prices for one-of-a-kind Christmas presents that don’t leave a dent in your wallet.

16 Nicolson Street is hosting an evening of Christmas celebration with performances, games and music from 7-10pm tonight. The main event is their Christmas Silent auction, a fundraiser for the newly opened gallery to support projects in the new year. Bidding is already underway, you can browse the works for sale, donated by more than 25 artists from Glasgow and elsewhere, on their website and email bids to 16nicholsonstreet@gmail.com.

Sat 10 Dec: Transmission and Rhubaba

Transmission's Video Show exhibition continues this weekend. Video work submissions by Transmission members will be screening today and tomorrow.

Rhubaba in Edinburgh is hosting Snowed Under, a Christmas Party fundraiser to forget the cold and ignore the woes of the outside world from 8pm to midnight. Tickets cost £3 on the door and a suggested donation of £1 for drinks is encouraged, give a little to a good cause! There are several activities on tonight’s programme including a quiz by Sian Robinson-Davies & friends, a slushy maker, and Embassy DJs and the Bing Bong Brothers will spin the decks to keep you on your feet all night.  

Sun 11 Dec: Tramway

This is your last chance to see Ella Kruglyanskaya’s exhibition at Tramway. Read our feature about her vibrant trompe l’oeil paintings of curvaceous women and bulbous Bauhaus vessels here. Tramway is open 12-6pm.

Mon 12 Dec: Coburg House Art Studios

JOY opens tonight from 6pm to late at Coburg House Art Studios in Edinburgh. The exhibition is presented by Poor art* a contemporary art database and online magazine (visit their website here).

The title JOY refers to ‘the face with tears of joy’, an emoji encompassing our reaction to modern life in handy shorthand, which was declared the Oxford English Dictionary’s word of the year in 2015; Poor art* is the internet’s flagrant vernacular of Poor expression*. JOY will feature work by artists Sam Wood, Beth Carey, Julia Barbour and Michael Kay Terence. You can also visit the exhibition between 11am and 5pm until 18 Dec.
