Tue 29 Mar: James N Hutchinson at Collective

In Collective Gallery on Tuesday, artist and researcher James N Hutchinson presents his project on Collective's Calton Hill. Find out what he means when he talks about its 'asterism', in a short talk with academic astronomer James Brown. They'll talk about some of the more fun bits of science like constellations and star clusters, and their figurative application into mapping the historical figures who have orbited Calton Hill. Tonight from 6pm, tickets available here.

Wed 30 Mar: BAS8 at Dovecot, Sound Thought at CCA

You may have already visited British Art Show 8 (at venues across Edinburgh until 8 May), and might have wondered about the curly carpet in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Come and see it dance in a choreography by Northern Ballet's Kenneth Tindall. The artist Linder will also deck out the ballet dancers in signature sportswear by fashion designer Christopher Shannon. Tickets are priced between £8-20, and can be booked via Eventbrite.

Also on Wednesday but over in Glasgow, there is Sound Thought 2016 at the CCA. This annual music and sonic festival is run by University of Glasgow postgraduates, who coordinate a series of concerts, screenings, performances, discussions and workshops – see the full programme on the CCA website. On Wednesday at 7.30pm, Rhubaba presents their choir's collaboration with artist Richy Carey. For this performance, Carey will provide a visual soundtrack, which the choir will respond to sonically. This is free, but ticketed; booking details here.

Thu 31 Mar: The Old Hairdressers

This Thursday a new curatorial initiative – Curatable – launches its Glasgow wing in the Old Hairdressers, with free refreshments, works from the participating artists and DJs. Run by students, it's spread across Dublin's National College of Art and Design and Wimbledon College of Fine Art. Maybe a keen commercial sense amongst undergrad art students is a menace, or not. Go along, have a drink and decide from 8-11.30pm.

Fri 1 Apr: Mount Florida Studios, Edinburgh Printmakers

Heading to Glasgow's Southside this Friday, Mount Florida Studios presents their second screening event of artists' moving image.  Eight artists' work will be presented from 6-8pm in the studios, which are just around the corner from the Mount Florida Station on Clincart Road – an easy train journey from Central.

In Edinburgh, Friday sees a couple of events for Edinburgh Printmakers' new exhibition of work by Edinburgh-based artist Robert Powell. With lasercut and screenprinting, Powell has built a mini transhistorical and metropolitan utopia. Through cutaway façades, its inhabitants are different figures from across "history, art, literature and mythology." Powell will first present an artist's talk, then there is the preview from 7.30-9pm. Species of Space, as it's titled, will continue until 16 July.

Sat 2 Apr: The Project Cafe Glasgow, Kevin Harman

Following the first Common Ground Residency in the Cairgorms during November 2015, there is an exhibition and auction of the participating artists' work this Saturday from 6.30-9.30pm at the Project Cafe in Glasgow. The funds raised will go towards the new residency programme and further events. The exhibition, Pivot, will continue until 1 May.

From Saturday in the Ingleby Gallery, controversial Edinburgh-based artist Kevin Harman presents new glass works in No Man's Land. Six years on from his smashing of Collective's gallery window with a scaffolding pole and the resulting legal proceedings, the window and legal correspondence will be presented in the space. Also on show are his painting works, made from double-glazing units he has pulled apart then filled with household paint to make large form abstractions. The exhibition continues until 21 May.

Sun 3 Apr: Common Guild at GFT

Heading to Sunday, the Common Guild present a film by Akram Zaatari in the GFT. Twenty-Eight Nights and a Poem (2015) is a "striking visual essay" which continues Zaatari's "ongoing engagement with the work of photographer Hashem el Madani, who ran a commercial studio for five decades in southern Lebanon." Tickets are available from Glasgow Film Theatre at the usual cinema prices (£8.50/7).
